Townhouse noise levels?

We are relocating and are considering a townhouse complex for a few years while we get to know the area. We are currently in a very quiet single family home. Will we be able to hear our neighbors in a townhouse or are the walls between units generally sound proof?

Re: Townhouse noise levels?

I live in a townhouse, but we are the end unit (so we only have neighbors on one side). We NEVER hear anyone. It's very quiet.

One of my brothers also lives in a townhouse and he has neighbors on both sides. We were talking about the same thing a couple of weeks ago and he said he never hears his neighbors either. My best friend used to own a townhouse, too. While she normally couldn't hear her neighbors, her bedroom and her neighbor's master bedroom shared a wall. She said she COULD hear them when in her bedroom... Chat Icon

So, I think the layout plays a HUGE role. When looking, pay attention to the layout of the units and what abutts your neighbors' units. For example, in our townhouse, very few rooms share a wall with rooms in our neighbor's unit. The kitches adjoin and one spare bedroom. Other than that, it's a half bath and the staircase. part of our finished basements also adjoint - but we've never heard them while we are in the basement either. Our master bedroom, living room, etc. don't adjoin, which affords a lot more privacy.

Also, our walls are thick cinder blocks behind the sheetrock, so I'm not sure we'd hear them even if we had rooms sharing that shared a wall.

Re: Townhouse noise levels?

I think it depends on the year they were made and the layout of the townhouse. We can hear our neighbors--our building was built in the 70s and is not well insulated. We can hear when they run appliances. Our bathrooms abutt, and we can hear them talking (and occasionally peeing Chat Icon).

I lived in a townhouse just like this for 10 years. Once in a rare while I'd hear my neighbor running up the stairs & then right before we moved a new couple bought the unit next door & had a crazy surround sound system that we could hear, but just barely.

Same here.

Our townhome community was built in 2003 and made of cement with steel beams so i'm sure that helps.

Re: Townhouse noise levels?

We live in a townhouse (middle unit) and we never hear a sound...and both of our neighbors have dogs. We love it!
