Born and bred, and have never left Queens including
- all schooling (elem to college)
- married in Queens
- moved around to various neighborhoods (but still in Queens)
- currently most of my family is in a 10 mile radius of each
- we will stay in Queens because DH owns a restaurant here and works many late & long hours so I wouldn't want him to have a long commute

Looks like I'm a 718er for life Chat Icon

AWWWWWWWWWW yeah Queens!!!! Thats right!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

, but if you move here as an adult and really embrace the new york way of life then you can be considered a new yorker

i actually think the circumstances must be extreme and it is very rare to consider one of these people a new yorker Chat Icon Chat Icon

yeah I wont buy it. I think if you want to become an honorary NY'er you need to get approval or ny citizenship from a mean bred New Yorker like myself.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR

This is my take on it....

I think anyplace you spend growing up in your "school years" is the place you can call home. So from ages 5-18 really shape where you are bred. Life during these years shape who are are as an adult. Granted between 18-30 you do much more growing up in terms of being responsible and really learn to be an adult, I dont think if you move to NYC during these years you should call yourself a new yorker. even if you live here from like 18-70Chat Icon if you came from lets say the south, you will always be from the south.

Now I was born and bred in NYC, I love it and when i'm out of town i do miss it but when I get a view of that skyline on the car or plane ride home and know that I am HOMEChat Icon

ETA: I think when people say "New Yorker" they specifically mean "NYC", I would consider Long Island separate...as well as Staten Island (After all these years I really don't see it as a boroughChat Icon )

I was born and bred in NY (specifically Long Island) but if I had the chance, I would definitely be a Texan. I relate so much more to the state and I feel like it's "home" when I'm there. I hate coming back here when I'm down thereChat Icon

I think being a New Yorker is a very specific thing, it has to be part of who you are, I think that happens by living in the NYC area in your formative years.

I was born and raised in Upstate NY and I am not a New Yorker, I actually specify that I am from Upstate NY when people ask; to me Upstate and downstate or two very different worlds.

New York is a very interesting place, it is very regionalized; from being on this website I find that most people from LI see anything north of the Bronx as Upstate, I live in Saratoga County and around here downstate begins around Poughkeepsie, we have a camp in the Adirondacks and people who live there consider anything south of Warrensburg(Lake George) to be downstate.

I lived in Queens for 34 years before moving to LI to get married.(Civil Service has a residency requirement, so DH wasn't able to move)

I agree with the above poster about upstate vs downstate. I was in Saratoga for a conference, and had a hard time adjusting to the fact that I was still in NY. (I even caught myself looking for out-of state license plates!) Chat Icon

I think it really depends on the situation. I am not a native New Yorker but I live here now (my husband and his family, however, are). If we are on vacation somewhere and someone asks me where we are from I say New York. Why? Because thsi is where we live now and I am not going to give people the story of my life and really what they are asking is where we live.

However, if I am here and someone asks me where I am from originally then I say Miami. So, for me, it all depends on context.

Either way, its no big deal. Who cares what people identify themselves as...

I love being from NY and I think we have one of the greatest states in the country because we have everything (major city, coastal living, gorgeous mountains) NY has everything, and it's regions are very diverse and unique.

ITA. I'm a LI'er, and my DH is from Binghamton. We have VERY different views on what "being a NY'er" means.

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR

I was born in Manhattan with parents from the Bronx who lived in Queens and we still own a family business in Brooklyn (and have for over 50 years). I grew up living in Nassau County and then spent 8 years of my adult single life as a Queens resident.

Having said all of that, I do consider myself a NYer. All of us (my siblings) still live in the NY Metropolitan area and odds are that we won't leave. DH and I may buy a home in New Jersey when the time comes, but we would still consider ourselves NYers.

I will wholeheartedly admit that I am NY-centric and have to remind myself that the rest of the world is not. I do have an LI accent that is more prominent when I am amongst LI/NYers, but when I go out of state, it is very easy to see that I am not a "local."

I was born and bred there, although I haven't lived there in 5 years. I still consider myself a New Yorker. In fact my license plate says "NYORKR" Chat Icon

same here. We are sooooooo darn lucky and there is always something to do. Ok, so it's expensive. It's worth it though.

I feel like I couldn't truly relate to someone who wasn't a NY-er. I don't know what it was like for someone growing up somewhere else.......but I know what NY was like!

NY, IMO is like it's own culture. KWIM?

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR

Chat Icon after reading through this thread, I guess I am not a new yorker, but a staten islanderChat Icon

I guess its true too....I know people live a completely different life as a new yorker then a staten islander.

sitting on an express bus mornings and nights.

standing at the bus stop wearing the same ny and co pants as 2 other girls.

knowing the intense feeling of staying out after work too late..everyone else jumping in cabs...not having the 85.00 to burn and missing the last bus, ughhhh trucking it down to the ferry to totally kill any buzz you might have had going on.

My mother was born in Chelsea and moved to Staten Island at 18. She is all city and soooo not staten island at all.

My dad was born in the same house that they still live in, he is all staten island.

A certain pride and defensiveness comes with being a staten islander. WE pay taxes. We have the longest freaking commute. To even consider a job midtown is a life changing experience, as then it will add on another hour a day of your life you won't get back.

Nothing makes native staten islanders more angry then the assumption that everyone is from Brooklyn.

Staten Island people always have my back, no matter what. They are great people. Different then city people, but great people.

I notice down in charlotte, even here, they don't consider staten island part of the real NY.
