Co-workers and friends not understanding your training

I'll be doing a marathon in Oct. and a sprint triathlon in Sept. I have found that some friends and all my co-workers are really unsupportive ( is that the right word?) of my training. My co-workers are especially being really weird about it. If I hear one more time "Running causes heart attacks" I'm going to let fly with "But those extra thirty pounds you're carrying doesn't?"
And if I say something about the office running an hour over closing time again, when we don't have to. I get "oooooh you just want to go do your little workouts" Well, yeah! Plus if they didn't screw around and move like freaking snails at the end of the day we'd be getting out on time. Bring a healthy lunch and I get "oooooh, aren't we just the good one?" Lots of eye rolling when I bring my workout bag in. Truly, what is their freaking problem? I didn't tell them that I was doing any of these events but my boss did ( she's very supportive). My friends aren't nearly as bad but I do get "You make us feel bad when we eat crap and lie around." Chat Icon
Thanks for letting me vent.

It unfortunate that people are not being more positive. You just have to be the bigger person and chock it up to their obvious unhappiness with themselves. You are taking steps to ensure your good health by eating well & exercising regularly. It's annoying BUT I wouldn't let it bother me. Let them eat their ho-ho's and you just stick to your plan!!!

On a side note, congrats on all of your hardwork & training. I'm sure it'll payoff. I know the actual events are while off but keep us posted on your results.

ITA with this.

I am sorry they don't understand how much this means to you Chat Icon I find that often times people who act like this are just envious of what you are doing, how you are living your life or what goals you are trying to achieve. They feel the need to put you down to make themselves better and it's not right but that's just how some people can be.

Definitely don't let it get to you - it sounds like you are taking this seriously and working towards an amazing accomplishment. Good luck and don't let those Debbie Downers bring you down!! Chat Icon

Sounds like they are just upset with their own lazy azzes b/c they just sit around while you're actually DOING something!! My Mom told me a long time ago that if people are nasty it usually comes down to jealousy, and I think that's what it's about in your case....keep up the good work!!!

YES! ! !

To the OP, keep up the good work and use their negativity to drive you to work out even harder!

Good luck!

Ignore them. Trust me, they only wish they were in as good shape as you are.

This is also why I never told anyone when I was training for my marathons. People who go straight home after work to watch TV or hit McDonalds every day for lunch would never understand what a healthy lifestyle is. Just keep doing what you're doing and pay them no mind.

Best of luck..remember, on marathon day, it's nice to have the support of friends, but you're the one who has to find the inner strength to carry yourself across the finish line. Chat Icon Chat Icon

No, unsupportive isn't the right word--that's too nice--rude, obnoxious, inapropriate, . . . sounds more like it, from what you posted!

I have a co-worker training for a half marathon, and while running isn't my thing, I certainly don't make fun of her for it. I think it's pretty impressive.

That is so freaking immature!!!

I am usually training for something or another...and every person in my life is supportive and impressed with my dedication and hard work.

Kudos to you...you deserve a hug and big pat on the back. You are doing what most people can't and/or will never do. Keep up the good work, and don't listen to these negative, draining individuals. Join a training team, there you will find people who share the same passion and support you and stop talking to these people...tell them you don't have room in your life for their negativity...refuse their comments!

I was going to say the exact same thing - People spew negativity at those they are envious of .....it's just human nature.
Ignore it - They're jealous they don't have the dicipline and motivation or passion to do it -

Wow that is so crazy. Those people are SO jealous of you and your healthy lifestyle. They should take the opportunity to learn from you and not try to make you feel bad about it. You should definitely stand up for yourself and your healthy ways next time they say something. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think it is great that you have all these goals to accomplish. I think your co-workers are just jealous that you have the ability that they don't. Running is great for your heart! I know it is hard, but you have to just ignore them. I am sure the people saying these things to you aren't in good shape right?

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Congrats on all of your hard work!

You just keep doing what you're doing and don't pay any mind to them.

I too get a lot of comments from people, even family sometimes. What it boils down to is that people feel guilty that they are NOT doing anything to better their health or themselves and you are. So, they try to make themselves feel better by putting you down and making it like you are the one in the wrong. This happens to me all of the time now. I just use it as more amunition to keep me goingChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was training for a half marathon, then moved down to a 10k(which I ran today) due to tendonitis. Those 6 miles today hurt, but it was worth it.

Anyway, my point is people have made plenty of nasty comments to me and it has always been people who have been out of shape.

Don't pay attention to them. I know it's hard but they are just trying to bring you down.

Keep your chin up and keep running :)
