Re: Buffalo

My SIL lives in Rochester, they have been there for about seven years. They really like it up there, I'm just not sure I would be able to stand the winters.

Re: Buffalo

DH has an interview near there (Fredonia) and we are trying to figure out if we would like it there. I think if he got the job in Fredonia we would want to live close to Buffalo even though it would be a commute for him. We do have one couple friend in Buffalo but dont know much about the area besides what they have told us.
I know it would be hard due to being far away and the winters but I also like the idea of selling our house here and banking a lot of the money for the future. Other pros and cons would be great.

I went to College in Buffalo and at the time I thought I could live there forever...then I came on exchange to Manchester and I thought I Could live there forever...

I loved Buffalo, but the winters are harsh!!! In the actual nice areas of Buffalo you can get beautiful old houses for a good price, and there is quite a bit of culture there, you can get into Toronto in like 2 hours, and Toronto is fantastic!

My Uncle used to commute out towards Fredonia before he retired. They built their house in Orchard Park. A very upstanding area, such as Stony Brook, Setauket down here, but def. not as expensive (although it's avail there if you want it). Orchard Park is on the far end of Buffalo, and close to the Thruway for easy access. Honestly, winters in Buffalo can be harsh, but visiting my aunt and uncle this xmas, they hadn't received as much snow as the rest of Buffalo b/c of where they live and not being in the belt straight away from Lake Erie when lake effect snow hits.

Drive around the areas. If he'll be working in Fredonia, also look at Dunkirk, Chataqua (very nice area!!!) and Jamestown.

Good luck and let us know if you have any questions in one area in particular.

Thanks! I just saw a job posted for me in Dunkirk and was trying to get info on that area. I also wanted to find out which areas would not get the lake effect snow, so I will look at Orchard Park.

As long as your prepared for snow, cause all areas surrounding Lake Erie get hit with snow at some point after October 1. This includes Dunkirk, Fredonia, etc. There's no real way to avoid it. And there will be days where the Thruway will be closed due to this type of weather.

Re: Buffalo

I live about 1.5 hours from Buffalo (outside of Rochester), but I commute about 40 minutes per day to work.

They do a really good job clearing the snow here, they are used to it and prepared for it.

However, I still loathe my commute when it snows because everyone slows down - no matter how "clear" the roads are.

That is something your DH should consider when looking for an area to live.

You should also look into building a home!

Good luck!

Re: Buffalo

I know to be prepared for snow but I know some towns get hit worse then others. Any suggestions of nice towns, not too far from fredonia, that don't get the lake effect?
I appreciate all tye feedback and advice!Chat Icon

Re: Buffalo

I live in the Buffalo area and have all my life. Most of the areas you are looking are considered the snowbelt area. Coming from LI, Fredonia will be a difficult move for you. It was hard for my DH moving to the suburbs. PM if you want more info.
