We don't usually go anywhere during the summer , other than maybe Hershey , Sesame ... but this year we would like to do something diffferent , few little weekend or middle of the week short trips with the kids - to drive or take a short flight and stay 2-3 days .
I just don't know where we can go or stay that is family friendly and fun, but not too $$$ . I looked up few places in NY, NJ, CT, Massachusetts ... Most of the hotels I look up are so overpriced and not really getting very good reviews.

So do you have any ideas plans for this summer? Please share Chat Icon

Do you camp? We do and love it. It's great for short trips and fine with little ones.

Or what about Gettysburgh this summer? It's the 150th anniversary and I know my DH is dragging me there.

How about Saratoga, lake Placid, somewhere in the adirondacks. Let them run on hiking trails...

There is also a little tiny family friendly amusement park called Knoebels in PA. You could do that. Or Lancaster, PA.

We rented a house in Niantic, CT last summer. It was way cheaper then a beach hotel/motel. We were walking distance to nice, small community beaches. The town itself has restaurants, ice cream shops and a children's museum. And Mystic was only about 20 minutes away.

Any city near the beach is going to be expensive over the summer. Prime season for them.

What about Washington, DC or Baltimore Harbor?

It doesn't have to be by the water or by the beach, not really ready for the beach this summer anyway Chat Icon
Irt can be just a nice family friendly place to go out for dinner with the kids and go do some activities . That's all, nothing too expensive or fancy.

A 6 month old is really just going along for the ride no matter where you go, so I would find something that the 5 year old will like.

Hershey or the Dutch Wonderland/Lancaster area has some nice places to stay. The Eden Resort is nice, has a great outdoor pool area.

I would opt for Montauk or Lake George. Laidback, lots of kids & within driving distance.

I second Gettysburg, we went in 2002 and it was awesome, been dying to go back, we are finally going this summer too. Lauren and Liam will love it!

We've done Philly, DC, Boston and Mystic and loved them. Going to Pittsburgh in May and really looking forward to it. We also did Chicago last summer which was amazing but not close to you. Hope to do Cincinnati next year Chat Icon

You can always priceline hotels. I've done that and saved a lot. I've also found B&B's on line and stayed there which is fun and can be affordable, plus breakfasts are included. My kids adore them. Some places don't take kids, so check their policies before booking. I look at websites carefully to find places with a bit of historic character. It makes a B&B stay more fun for us.

Mystic is fun for a day. Between the seaport and the aquarium there's plenty to see and enjoy for both adults and small children. Sometimes there are coupons combining both. I know the New London Ferry offers some at slow times of year or at school breaks because I have used them.

I think what's most important is to decide what you and your husband would like to see and do then plan your getaway around it. Most likely you will find things a child would like as you two enjoy yourselves. This is your time to decompress, relax and have fun together and see new things. Children may not even remember most of a trip when they get older, so don't plan it around them.

We did Philly last year and spent a day at Sesame Place. We plan to do the same this year. They have a children's museum and an aquarium nearby.

I love Philly. Such an easy drive, or you can take the train. Great children's museum, and the city is so walkable.

Providence, RI is a great small city too and not a bad drive at all.
