Grrr! I hate presumptous people! - Update - 1/31/09 - and the hits keep coming!!
So, I had to send an email to a secretary at another office who does not know me.
So, she writes back, "Thanks, Mike."
Ummmm.....
OK -first of all - you look like a dumbazz, because my name is not Michael, it's Michal.
Second of all, don't presume a nickname. You don't know me. If I signed my email "Elizabeth," I think it would be equally as rude to write back to me, "Thanks, Liz."
Grrr - so I wrote back -
You are welcome. FYI - It's not Mike, it's Michal, I'm not a man.
Vent over. Carry on.
Update - 1/31/09 - If you can believe it - a similar situation just happened again
DH just got a new job - he was checking work email at home last night and calls me over laughing - he got the following from someone in HR - btw - his name is Jamie - so yes, we have gotten a few times where people think Jamie is the girl and Michal is the guy - but this is a new one for us!

This was (part) of the email -
Jamie: call me at xxx as soon as you can.
Your enrollment form indicated to give your spouse $xxxxx Life Ins.
Is your spouse Michal W... male or female ?.
The reason I have to ask is the City can not give life insurnace to same sex partner at this time.
think we have a lawsuit on our hands???

Yeah it's presumptious. I don't like when people shorten my name who don't know me. If you know me, fine. Otherwise it's not right- and totally unprofessional at work.
I would never write back to a Richard and say, "THANKS D!CK!"

OMG, my biggest pet peeve. My full name is Patricia, I do go by Trish, and in my younger years, my friends called me Patty. But if I introduce myself as Patricia, do NOT respond with PAT.

There's this new guy here and he keeps trying to make conversation with me, which I guess is nice - so i'm always polite.
Other day in the kitchen, he's leaving the area and says "see ya later buddy" and slaps me on the shoulder gently
#1 we're not buddies
#2 slap me again and my shoe will be so far up your a$$ you'll be able to taste shoelace

So annoying!
I actually have the opposite problem - I go by my nickname (Yesi, which is pronounced "Jessi") at work and I HATEEEEE when new clients or whatever presume my name is Jessica. Um NO, it has not and won't ever be Jessica. Just call people by how they introduce themselves to you! How hard is that???
The funny thing is that when I started I figured it would be easiest to go by my nickname because people always have a hard time with my full name - but they butcher both of them regardless  . And now there's another Yesenia at the company so we have to two name problem etc.

I'm all for a good lawsuit, but this one is not lawsuit worthy.  It's worthy for a good laugh though.
Now if they asked him if his spouse was a man or a women BEFORE he got the job, different story.
