I did.

First time I got the epi too late and it barely kicked in, so almost no pain relief, but still had the horrible recovery.

Second time I just went without. It freakin hurt but the recovery was sooooo much better - like I felt like I could have gotten up and walked out right after I pushed out an 8 pounder. I will add that it was an extremely quick delivery and I labored mostly at home.

In my experience there was no point of no return- I was almost 10 cm dilated when I got my combination epidural/spinal--the ob attending was convinced I would deliver quickly but the anesthesiology felt that since this was my first child it would take longer--I was in labor for 9.5 additional hours--unfortunately dd turned face up and I still felt most of the pain--until she decided to turn back over.
I was up and walking without assistance 2-3 hours after dd was born.

I did for DC #2 but not by choice. I was 4 cm when I walked into the hospital and by the time the anesthesiologist was ready to give me an epidural (an hour later) I was at 10 cm. I was in tears when the anesthesiologist told me it was too late for an epi. In hindsight though, I had a very easy recovery compared to DC #1 (longer labor and an epi that only had worked on the left side of my body). Without the epi, I was up and about the next morning and driving by the time I got home the following day. I'm contemplating having a drug free birth again for DC #3 because of the recovery time.

Nope and I hope I never have to lol. I give anyone who can do it a ton of credit. It's just not for me.

I didn't think my recovery w/ an epi was bad at all. I was able to walk about 1.5-2 hours after delivery. I was able to take DD to her first ped appointment the day after going home, by myself, without much of a problem other than soreness. I only had the epi for about 6 hours so I don't know if that makes a difference.

My epidural worked great and I still felt everything when it came time to push...crowning, tearing, everything. I feel like they scammed me telling me that they couldn't give any more epi drugs when it was time to push. Because I hear so many others who felt nothing during pushing. And for me it was horrendous.

As a side note I had the epidural as soon as I could and had a GREAT recovery. I was 100% pain free and myself in a week. I left the hospital feeling pretty damn good too. I had her Tuesday and drove on Saturday.

Re: so who here has had a natural birth?

I did with my first.

It was 18 years ago and the thought of a needle going into my back had me petrified( this was before becoming a nurse). Once we arrived at the hospital at 4cm dilated around 10/10:30pm everything happened pretty quick. DD was born at 4:30am.

Had Csections since then and will again, but if I could I would love to deliver vaginally naturally again.

I had an epi with dd1 and it was great. Just felt pressure during crowning, tearing etc. Not pain. Recovery though was rough. I was in pain for days.

Dd2 there was actually a tear in the epi tubing so most of it was dripping in the floor! Nobody believes me and said its normal to still feel just not pain. Well I felt pain too. Eventually they fixed it but it wore off when time to push and they won't top you off when it's time to push. I pushed for under 10 minutes with dd2 (just under an hour of pushing with dd1) but I felt everything. The pain was mind blowing but immed stopped once she was out. When the moved me to maternity I was up and walking to the bathroom right away. Recovery was so much better

Re: so who here has had a natural birth?

With my 1st, I ended up with an epi and it was pretty hard to push because I didn't really start to get feeling back until they started to stitch me up. My 2nd I ended up getting the epi too late and it wasn't worth it, so I tried #3 fully natural, I think it would have been fine had the midwife knew what she was doing, I was induced and on pitocin, she didn't turn off the pitocin till my contractions were on top of eachother that I couldn't breathe. So I had a hard time pushing because I didn't get a little break for a couple hours, it was very hard, but my recovery was my best, when I left the hospital 2 days later I was able to go pick up my 2 kids at prek, no problem. I plan on going natural again with #4, and I will never use a midwife again (I'm sure some are good, but my experience was too bad that I won't try it again).

They told me that at LIJ too. When mine wore off it was about an hour before I started pushing. They told me I was fully dilated and they couldn't give me more. I had it for about 2 hours. I progressed really quickly. I went from 1-10cm in that time. But yea my recovery was fine.

I just did nb pics for a friend and she didn't get an epi (not on purpose) and she said her recovery was fine as well... Her first sons entire birth was different than this one ... She was induced and was in labor for 3 days so her recovery wasn't great. It's hard to compare completely different situations

i also had a natural birth but not on purpose and i can say while the pain was bone crushing, my labor was short and my baby came out like a person on a waterslide. sorry to be gross. recovery was much better and easier than with my first, where i did have an epi and a third degree tear

Re: so who here has had a natural birth?

I had an epidural with DS but the anesthesiologist missed the target so it only worked on one side of my body...
The were able to "top off" the side that wasnt working every few hours.. but i had a TON of pain the entire time because it just wasnt working.
I pushed for 3.5 hours and felt everything.. it was horrible
Praying for a working epidural this time!!!!!!!!

I did, but not intentionally.
My DS was born at 28 weeks. I arrived at the hospital fully dilated and my water had broken. They were about to do a c-section because he was breech but there was no time and he just came out. It was less than 20 minutes after I got to the hospital. I was discharged from the hospital 12 hours later and felt fine.

Ditto.

For DS, I intended to go pain med free. But they induced me since my water broke. I was HURTING and asked for one. But I wasn't dilated enough so they said I had to wait and it was ordered. However, suddenly, I was at 10 cm and delivered DS without drugs. Fortunately, it was 2 pushes.

Going into delivering DD, I was NOT being a martyr and I asked for the epi and received it. HOWEVER, it only offered temporary relief because it was working on the left side, not the right, and when it came time to push, it was useless because I felt EVERYTHING.

So, to answer your question...I guess so!

I did not, but I almost did. I got an epidural when I was over 9 cm dilated, I started pushing 15 mins after they administered it and could still feel the contractions intensely. I had DS less than 40 minutes later. Luckily, the epi kicked in before he crowned.

Same here with my first. It was not a pleasant experience. I think if I were mentally prepared for a natural birth it wouldn't have been as bad. She is 16 months and I haven't forgotten it.

Not for me... I'm all for the comfort & safety of an epidural in place.

But I have to say that second babies are usually a lot easier to birth than first babies (I had no tearing & was breastfeeding & walking immediately after).

I did, by choice.
DH and I had taken Bradley method classes and I really wanted to try for an intervention free birth.

I got very lucky with my labor- it was very quick - I labored at home for as long as I could and I was 8cm when I got to the hospital so things progressed quickly and I only pushed for 25 minutes. My recovery was so easy - I didn't tear and I felt great.
