Re: self contained

In my school, self contained refers to a child who is in a full-time special ed class. There are requirements for how many kids can be in the class, as well as a mandate for teachers and paras. Those are the ratios Janet refers to- I believe 12:1:1 means twelve kids, 1 para, 1 teacher.

There are also kids who are in regular education classes but get resource room services. Those kids are NOT self contained but if it seems like RR is not meeting their needs they may be moved to a self contained, full time SE class.

In regular ed, as it pertains to middle school, self contained means that the kids have the same teacher for most subjects (i.e. math, reading, science). Fifth graders in my school are self-contained but 6th through 8th are not as they have different teachers for each subject.

Hope this helps.
