Babies and dogs at home parties?

Any way for the dog to be disinterested with the baby?

I dont want ds to get licks, scratches, nibbles. This little teacup like dog jumps all over the place and i cant put ds down on a mat anywhere without worrying if its been slobbered on, or if the dirty paws have walked over it.

Can you bring a PnP? Or that baby pen thing with the plastic sides? That is the only thing, other than locking up the dog!

Unless it's owners keep it away, there is nothing much you can do if you put your baby down on someone else's floor.

hmmm.... hadnt really thought of bringing the pnp or getting a gate... it would take up alot of room.... but i might need to consider it.....

its funny cause there is another dog that shows up too, which isnt hyper or a problem at all.

Re: Babies and dogs at home parties?

Even in our own house, I started using the pack n play in lieu of putting DS on a blanket on the floor.

While I was always near and trust our dogs, 1. You never really know and can trust any animal with a baby (they's get excited from a squirrel outside or rough house with each other). And 2. They did walk over the play mat or blanket and it just got to be enough with the washing and cleaning and wiping constantly.

At least in his PnP, he and his toys are protected from the dogs. Dirt, unintentional scratches or otherwise.

If we went to a party at someone's house who had dogs and would be there for a while, I'd bring the pack n play.

We have issues with this when we go to my BIL's the kids put the dog away b.c they see it scares DD#1 but their mother lets it out every time and it jumps all over DD who is terrified. So we end up having to leave or hold her the whole party. I think you could nicely ask if they could put the dog in another room. I had a lab growing up and we always put her away when we had company b.c she was very friendly and BIG and would jump on everyone and some people were afraid.

when we have other kids over, our dog is generally put in another room or brought to my MILs house.

I'll be honest and say I wouldn't even ask someone to put their dog away if I came to their house.

We have a dog, and when people come here, I make a point of telling them that, they can choose not to, or not put their child down or whatnot, but they know when they come to MY house that it is my dog's house too. For DS' birthday parties, we put her in the backyard with everyone else, when we host Christmas, she is here. We have a small house she would bark and cry if she was put behind a closed door.

My dog is jumpy (she is a beagle) but she usually is just jumpy for a few minutes, but then novelty wears off and she goes about her business.

I cannot for the life of me understand someone allowing their dog to jump all over someone's child... what a risk!! Any animal is capable of harming a person, esp a small child, who may pull at the dog or poke it unintentionally, thus causing the dog to get upset and possibly aggressive.

I don't have a dog, but grew up with them, and would NEVER allow a dog like that around children.

I work in the insurance field and handle dog bite claims, and from what I have seen, it makes me sick. You are jeopardizing not only another CHILD, but your home is on the line with potential lawsuits!!!

I agree with this. I would not lock my dog in a room either when guests came over, unless it was a safety issue. My dogs would freak out being locked in a room while a "party" was going on. They would be worse in another room and make a miserable time for everyone, scratching and howling, etc, whereas if they are in the room, they would get out their initial excitements then chill out.

And I worked in PI law, so I know the same claims/cases.

This is why I ALWAYS let people know I have a dog, but there is simply no place to put her when people come over. If someone has a problem with that, then they can either not come to my house.

I've taken DS to houses where they have dogs and I keep an extra special eye on him b/c it isn't OUR dog who he is used to, I truly feel this is part of being a parent. Would you not go to a party where people are having a few beers because there is the potential of someone getting belligerent?

It really depends on the pet. There are dogs who will jump once, lick you, and walk away, then there are dogs who will continually jump on you and lick you non stop all day long. For example my BIL has the cutest dog ever but it is very hyper and pees when she is excited she does not stop jumping, chasing my DD the whole time we are there. So we should never visit b/c he has peed on my sil's brothers lap, and we can not put DD down b.c she will never stop?

I think it is the host's responsibility to ensure the safety and comfort of THEIR guests, not the guest's responsibility to watch for their safety in someone else's home. THAT is NOT to say I am not responsible for watching my child to ensure they don't provoke the animal etc and use my own common sense. But if the owner knows that their dog jumps, nips etc it should be the owners responsibility that their guest is safe.

If the dog bites someone in your home you can't say well the guest knew I had a dog and came over anyway so it is their responsibility - you are still responsible for that pet.

I don't think you can compare an animal who no matter how loving whose nature can be unpredictable w/ adults who are capable of reason and having a beer or drinking. Adults would not be biting each other I would hope.Chat Icon

Of course it is my responsibility if she was to bite, and honestly, I only know my own life and situations. If I was to bring my son to a house with a dog that isn't ours and he was rough with her that IS my fault for not watching him and not keep him away from the dog.

It is all semantics (again)

And people don't bite, but they hit and get into fights, can be equally dangerous (not that I bnig my child to places like that, but people can snap just like animals can honestly, especially in certain social situations)

ETA-Maybe I am lucky, my parents had a dog that was jumpy but never nipped and my dog has never either

This I totally agree w/ no matter what it is DEFINITELY the parent's responsibility to ensure that their child doesn't provoke an animal.

From my stand point I had two cats and they HATED to be put down in the basement but whenever we had company it was our responsibility to put them away b.c we knew we were inviting people with cat allergies or children so that I knew that their children would be safe even IF they wouldn't have bitten without provocation. I hated doing it but felt that as a host it was my responsibility to ensure that my guests are safe. I also grew up with a 90 lb lab who was NOT aggressive in any way - but we always put her away when we had company - she would initially jump and lick people but we felt that we shouldn't have to subject our guests to that even if we knew she wouldn't bite - sometimes we had people ask us to let her out - but it was out responsibility to ensure the safety of our guests.

Re: Babies and dogs at home parties?

to be 100% honest we lock both of our dogs up whenever we have guests... they are jumpy, licky dogs and really, if your dogs acts that way, then you shouldnt expect your guests to deal with it.. that is just my own opinion... there is nothing more annoying then a dog all over you when it isnt even your own.... add a child into the mix and forget it... however our dogs are even locked out of the room where ds's are during the day unless both dh and i are around just because their shear size can cause issues....

now, my bil has a cat that has no problem jumping on us, and since they apparently cant lock out a cat because the cat knows how to escape we just dont put them down there....

Re: Babies and dogs at home parties?

My dogs jump. They get excited for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Then they stop. They are well trained but like all small dogs they are bit more hyper.

They love kids and everyone. They will lick you to death.

But everyone coming to my house is allowed to enjoy themselves too.

Even as a dog lover, I am not sure I could take a dog that jumps on me the whole party on and off.

My nephew is terrified of dogs. We have let them lose around him for a few minutes to teach him not to be afraid. This is a VERY supervised interaction.

So my dogs are usually in their crate when we have company.

If I'm going to someones house who owns a dog- then I expect the dog will be out(unless the dog has a biting issue and then i doubt the owners want the liability).

Our situation is the house is his grandparents. they host ALOT of the family parties. The relative brings the puppy over. The other dog who another relative brought was a actually a beagle who was older and well behaived. The first time the puppy was brought over they had a leash and kept the dog contained, now they had a baby they dont. This relative never hosts parties, so i dont think we'll ever have to worry about the dog at their own house.
