Checking for Ticks

Hi All-
I live in a very ticky area. I'm not exaggerating when I say that many of my neighbors have had Lyme disease.

I've always been very vigilant about checking every centimeter of my children's bodies for ticks after they play outside. I've found some ticks on them throughout the years, never had any Lyme disease scares though {knock on wood}.

So, my soon-to-be 9 year old DD does not want me to check her anymore. She feels that she could do it herself. I know in a way she's right, and I want her to always believe that she has a right to decisions about her body.

What should I do? Do you let your children check themselves, or do you help them at all? (Particularly if you live in a woodsy, ticky area).

Thanks for any advice!

I would let her check herself but I would insist on checking hard to reach places (like her head, etc).

I was going to say the same. I'd probably tell her you need to check her head and back but she can do the rest. DH gets several every year and he almost always finds them himself but I check his back and head for obvious reasons.

I agree with the other posters. I’d still check hard to see spots on her. I do the same for my DH and DS.

Thanks for the replies...that's what I'll do. I'll talk to her about thoroughly checking herself, and I'll check her back and hair. Thanks!

Re: Checking for Ticks

We have dealt with ticks every year. My 4 yr old stepped in a tick nest last year and had over 50 babies all over his body last summer. Nightmare!

When my dd was in kindergarten she told her teacher she felt a tick on her head. She went to the nurse and the nurse said she’s fine. Didn’t even check her! Thank goodness she told me when she got home and I found a big one on her head in less than 10 seconds!

My 2 older ones now 5 and 7 have caught ticks on each other many times now. I always check their heads though. My 7 yr old knows what she Is looking for so I let her. I would let her look for herself, but probably ask to check her head and back. I’ve been showing dd how to check her head, but I feel like the deer ticks could get lost in her hair.

Ugh I hate ticks!!

Have her use a lint roller, the ones with the sticky paper. I actually keep one in my glove box to use after hikes. I would still check her head though.
