Vent! Dr. On vacation for 2 wks with no coverage

My dr won't be back in the office until 1/6 & has no one there to take his place. I am running out of my monthly medication, they can't even send a refill into my pharmacy without him. It's ridiculous!

My daughter's doctor is the same. Luckily he sent out a notice so I refilled everything before he left. He takes off every single school vacation and it pisses me off because that is when the kids need him most.

I think every time I go to a doctor if it’s group practise there is always coverage , but if docs are solo u are left in the wind
My primary care retired and have to find a new one
My another primary had left to join a different type of practise and he too was solo
But my kids have group practice so they are covered

Re: Vent! Dr. On vacation for 2 wks with no coverage

DC's first ped was a solo doctor, but when he was on vacation, there was always an announced backup doctor that was available. DC are now in a practice, so there is always someone.
It's very irresponsible to not designate a backup doctor for vacations.

Recently a friend of mine had surgery as outpatient and had complications, the surgeon was solo and had no back up
No one else will touch / reoperate unless emergencies
It was a giant mess
Lesson learned - go to a group practise ESP for surgery

Is the Dr part of a larger practice? When my Dr is away, they usually have me go to another office and there are people on staff to handle prescriptions.

This happened to me last winter break at my pain management dr’s office
I literally went into withdrawal because no one was there to refill my meds
My husband made me go to the er, they were able to see ive been on the same meds for over a year and prescribed an amount to hold me over until she was back...not sure what kind of medicine you are on but maybe you should consider going to the emergency room and explaining your situation?!?

How short will you be on meds? Can the pharmacy do anything?

This is one of the reasons why single provider, private practice physicians are becoming extinct. There should NEVER be a time, in 2019, where a patient cannot access their medications because someone is out of the office.

I’d find another doctor. I don’t care what they’re like when they’re present, not making arrangements for their patients when they’re away makes them a bad doctor.

sometimes the pharmacy can call and hassle them for you. do you have an email for the dr? even if mine is away, he will respond to emails and things like that or provide coverage...

otherwise go to a urgent care and they can give you a small temporary prescription that would bridge the gap I'm sure.

Doctors are humans too and entitled to take a break. This rant reeks of entitlement. They probably have staff available and I am sure she will get her meds.

Never said they couldn’t take a break. They need to find coverage for their patients when they are unavailable.

For the most part you can go to an urgent care for your needs but there are certain meds that only certain doctors will refill. For example, it would be hard to get a physician who doesn’t know you to prescribe a controlled substance, psych meds, or any med that requires level monitoring even for a few days. So an emergency standby physician should be available to have access to medical records or the primary physician personally for these situations.

Exactly. Anything else reeks of irresponsibility.
I don't save lives for a living and I always have a back up when I'm on vacation .
Common. Sense.

Obviously this single doctor practice isn’t the right fit for you and you should look for another doctor with multiple doctors.

Poor planning on your part does not necessitate an emergency on mine.

She just said in the OP they can’t. And some people can’t survive without their medication.
Most jobs have a responsibility to provide coverage in your absence. If I left my clients high and dry during my vacations I would be fired.

Poor planning? Most pharmacies will not refill a prescription until 1-2 days out for certain meds.

Since there were no refills available she needed to make an appointment with her doctor when she saw no refills.

I don’t always need an actual appointment to renew a prescription.

I was lucky this time that my good friend is prescribed the same exact medicine and has in case I really need it. I am definitely going to switch to a larger practice, even though I like the doctor.

Wait, whose poor planning? Certainly not mine. I don't have to go into detail but I should have explained better. The medication comes in 9 pills/month and can only be refilled the day after the previous month was called in. Some months, 9 pills are used up within 2 weeks, sometimes they can last 4-5weeks. Poor planning is on the MD for leaving patients on their own. Also wanted to add, the year checkup is supposed to be in February and can't go earlier due to insurance.

I think there is no excuse for a doctor that goes on vacation without coverage. I'm not sure how that coverage needs to work in a single doctor situation, but I would expect that there would be office staff there, and a doctor that they can call if the patients need to be seen in that period and/or need refills.

If it were me, I'd go somewhere else.

Since it sounds like you have a medical condition, you should change to a larger practice. A solo practitioner usually still has a colleague that they "partner" with during times of vacation. Since yours has not, and you have medicinal needs, you need a practice that is more accessible.
