“Emergency” cell phone or tracking device for kids?

Hi - I am starting to research this but wondering if anyone has suggestions as well. I want to be able to track where my kids are via gps and have them be able to send me a text or call me. For now, it would be preferable if it doesn’t have any more functionality than that.
Anyone use a device or phone this way?
I was looking at the Relay but apparently the parent would have to have the app open all of the time to receive a message.

So perhaps a good but limited cell phone. Do any carriers offer a “child” service plan (either standalone or to combine my plan into)? Thanks in advance!

I don't have an answer to a lot of your questions, my kid had a phone at 9. But I am also divorced and I wanted him to be able to contact me if he needed me

Prior to that he did have an iPod Touch and as long as he was in wifi I could send him iMessages and call him on Facetime.

Yeah I use that too on my kids phones. But don't they have to have a phone?

how is your life360 working out? it will say my son left the house, once he's 5 blocks from home. I'd like it to be more accurate, but can't figure out a way to get it more precise. :/

My son is 10 and a half (almost 11), but I don't want him to have a truly functioning phone until he's a bit older.

So last year we got him a gadget gizmo watch from Verizon. It has an app that works with any phone (my husband has an LG, I have an iphone) and via the app you can control/monitor what your child is doing with it.

You can program up to 10 contacts into the phone that the child can call or text, and you can see all the activity from the app. You can also track your child with GPS (you can turn the GPS on and off from the app). It also has step counters and that type of thing if your child is into that.

There's no internet access.

It's perfect for what my son needs - sometimes he rides his bike to a local school yard to play or rides to a friend's house locally, but I like to be able to call him or text him to check in or ask him to come home. And having the GPS is good piece of mind.

We did the same. My son has a phone now but had a Gizmo Gadget until he was allowed to have a phone. Now my daughter has a gizmo gadget and it's great.

My DH and I used to use it for ourselves until one day I was on the train half way home from NYC and it showed him that I was in Montauk! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
We started to realize after that that it's not as accurate as it should be.
There was other times too that it was off.
I'm not a fan of it at all
