Are a lot of schools NOT closed this week?

I see someone on my FB who lives in NJ posted that their school closed for a snow day today (even though it hasn't started yet, so he was like joking around about- LOOK AT THIS SNOW DAY) but then I was like- wait aren't schools closed for winter break this week?

And I feel like I saw something else about a kid being sick and missing school this week somewhere else.

Is winter break not a thing everywhere anymore?

I don't think they all take them at the same time. AT least that's what the high school intern at my job was telling me. I don't know, I'm too old and my DD is too young to be sure. Chat Icon

I think only NY and maybe just down state NY is closed this week. All the NJ people I know are in school this week.

I'm in NJ. Besides Monday we are at school this week. We are off in April for the week for Spring break (Easter and Passover week) and in Nov we either get 3 days to a week off depending if it's Pres election or not and NJ teacher convention is the same week.

Yeah, a lot of the northern Westchester schools don't get this week off because they need to take so many snow days. This isn't a "normal" thing. It's really just the NYC area. Everywhere else, it's a regular school week.

Me and my sister always said they should do away with winter break. Build in more snow days, give us an earlier release in June, later start in Sept, whatever.
It's a rough week to have off- freezing cold and the kids go stir crazy in the house all week!

A lot of schools here in NJ are open. Most of the schools here today are having early dismissal due to snow

I'm upstate now and it is winter break this week at the school. Always has been so it's not just an LI/NYC area thing.

I 100% agree with this. As a working parent February break is rough. I'd love if the kids got out of school earlier or started later.

Re: Are a lot of schools NOT closed this week?

We are in NJ. Monday was a holiday. Tuesday was supposed to be a holiday, but then it became a half day late open as a make up snow day. Today is now a snow day because the snow is supposed to start at noon. If we had early dismissal, it would be in the middle of the storm. So we are now all home.

We get out of school usually by June 17. Our big break is spring break and Christmas break.

We were just in NJ this last weekend, from talking to locals it seems they don't have a winter recess. The schools were closed on Monday only for Presidents Day.

Re: Are a lot of schools NOT closed this week?

I never had off in February growing up. My kids had Friday and Monday off and Tuesday was a snow make up day, and now we are closed for snow today, we live in PA now.

ETA- my kids get out June 6th, and we start the last week of Aug. I really love the school calendar in PA. I always hated wasting all of June in school growing up.

We are in Rockland and our school was just closed Mon-Tues but most of the other schools in the county are closed all week. We get some days off around Memorial Day if it doesn’t snow and take full days for certain things other schools take half days for.

ETA - we have an early dismissal today.

Same. I’m a teacher in an Albany suburb and have off all week. I’ve worked in 2 other districts here and they’ve all had off.

ITA they should let them out earlier in June. If I were a kid that's what I would prefer! It's too close to Christmas break and spring break to make it worthwhile.

Re: Are a lot of schools NOT closed this week?

Agree. Give them off President's Day and that's enough. Christmas break just passed.

the only good thing is I hope they are using this week to disinfect the school because I have heard nothing but kids sick this week. So I'm glad DD isn't there in the hot bed of germs right now!

Not according to the teachers in our town... they say this week is needed to decompress.

I’m happy my kids have school. They were sick for most of their short break and bouncing off the walls by yesterday anyway.

Re: Are a lot of schools NOT closed this week?

In NJ not every town takes off the whole week for winter recess or it could be that they lost days due to previous closing of snow days.

My son is closed all week, my nieces schools aren't - only Friday and Monday.

My son lucked out though because I had to go to Canada this week for work, so he is chilling with me.Chat Icon

Are a lot of schools NOT closed this week?

My niece goes to a Jewish private school in Nassau. She was only off Monday. Her winter break was in January after MLK.
