Speech Therapy and NYSHIP/Empire Plan
Today we had our CPSE meeting with the school district about my son's articulation issues. The speech evaluation came back normal with a slight delay in one area, which is confusing because everyone in his life - teachers, pediatrician, and us - have a VERY hard time understanding him 75% of the time and thought he would qualify for services.
The school suggested getting speech therapy though our insurance, but I don't even know where to start. My DH is a government employee so we have the The Empire Plan/NYSHIP for insurance. Has anyone gotten speech covered through them? If so, can you give me an idea of the process?

Re: Speech Therapy and NYSHIP/Empire Plan
Hello
My son who is 4 receives therapy and is considered articulate.
Where are you located? i would rec mine to see if she is avaibale privately- we are in nassau county
But prior to my son being approved for services we researched our insurnace providers for a pathologist, there were a few who worked privately. I would def call your isnurnace co and get a list and call. The school who evaluated him should be able to give opinions on the therpist as well
PM me if you have any questions

Not sure where you're located but we've used Little Angels in blue point. Dd went for PT through cpse but I have friends with the same insurance that went for speech through insurance. They're a fairly large office so if you call they would be able to walk you through the process. Everyone there is wonderful and empire is always easy when it comes to covering stuff.

Just go to where you plan to get the service, they will do the approval. We have NYSHIP and my son goes to PT, I never even spoke with the insurance, the center did everything I just pay a $20 copay

We have nyship/empire plan and my daughter’s feeding therapy through a slt was covered with a $20 copay per visit. The slt office took care of everything, I never even spoke to insurance. I used LI myofunctional speech & Lang therapists.

Thanks. I thought we would just be able to go and then they'd figure out the insurance, but when I searched online I found all these people talking about fighting their insurance companies for coverage, so I got nervous. Empire is usually pretty good about covering things.

LOVE Little Angels. My daughter had strictly articulation issues. She didn't qualify for EI when she was 2 years old (they do not even test for articulation that young). At 2.5, I had her evaluated through our district and she did qualify and started services last spring. She went to Little Angels and they were amazing. She is now almost 4 and going into Pre-K and was just declassed. Her therapist assured me she is absolutely fine and does not need services but if I should ever feel like she's regressed, contact her and she will put in for insurance to cover it. There is a process but they handle it and know what to say to help get you covered. (I also have NYSHIP).
