GRAND Jury Duty
So I was called from Grand Jury starting next week in Riverhead.
If you have served how long did it go on for?
I am freaking out, I dont get paid by my job and I cannot afford to NOT get paid for a month or so. How does that work?
Also, I have 2 kids and no morning care for them before school so I have to put them on the bus.
I know its MUCH harder to get out of GRAND jury but , how does this all work?

If you have nobody to put your kids on the bus, I would just show up late and explain to them you have no childcare in the morning What the heck are they going to do?

GRAND Jury Duty
I went M-F for one month in Riverhead.
They will put your name in a bingo type thingy. They will usually call juries for Riverhead (several juries for Riverhead), Central Islip, and Hauppauge. Riverhead is M-F for one month. I think CI and Hauppuage are once or twice a week for 6 months or more. My coworker did Hauppauge every Friday for a YEAR. There is no interview, nothing. Your name gets called and you're in.

Everyone gets initially called to Riverhead, then they select the juries for all three that first day. Check your companies policy. My job paid me for the month because they did not specify a limit in their jury duty policy. After myself and my coworker were both called, they revised their handbook to reflect a 7 day limit.

I believe they do pay something for the day, but only if your company does not pay you. But it's something ridiculous like $40/day.

Wow. What if you have a family to feed? What if you are the sole bread winner? What if you can't pay your mortgage or rent? It's not fair that it should have to be a financial hardship to serve a jury. Our system is really fuked up

It is, I agree. I would say bring whatever backup you can to say that you can't serve because of financial hardship/childcare and approach the desk as SOON as you get there. There were people that showed up with little babies in strollers. I don't know if they were excused or not, but it's worth a shot. Once you get past that initial room full of people and into the jury room, its near impossible to get out of it. They warn you as they start calling names that they don't want to hear it, you get called and you're on.
One guy on the jury didn't show up once or twice because of problems, and they sent a sheriff to his house and threatened to fine him or something. They take it pretty seriously once in there.

Re: GRAND Jury Duty
Because you have to go to Riverhead initially; does not mean your assignment will be in Riverhead. They also pick by random who they need and who they don't. I think they keep 25 out of say 100. The 75 get to go home and are good for 6 years. Hopefully, you are that 75. lol But there is nothing you can say or do to get out of it like regular jury duty. (If that makes sense).
A coworker of mine had to go to Riverhead a few weeks ago; but they assigned her to Hauppauge every Friday. She has not been called back since; but most likely will be this week.
However, she was told that it wont necessarily be every Friday. She was given the option of every Friday from now until April. Or every day until I think Dec. She opted for Fridays; because her position; she cannot be out every day for the next two months; most especially this time of year.
And she was also told some days she can show up 10; sometimes 11 sometimes later. It would not be the same time every time; so you should still have the time for the bus in the mornings.

This makes me feel a little better. I am closest to Hauppauge so hopefully Id be assigned there or even CI is fine. I can totally swing every Friday but not an entire months pay at once. I wouldnt mind every Friday for a few months, especially if I didnt get called every one of those Fridays.

The thing is, I don't think you have a choice on the location. Everyone's name goes into the big bingo thing and they just call randomly. You could live in Shirley and get called to Hauppauge.

GRAND Jury Duty
Grand Jury is different all the time. When I got called I , that particular session was one day a week for 11 months...yes, almost a year. Grand Jury also does not give any excuses...there were literally people in their 90's who did not speak a word of English and they would not dismiss them. I ultimately did not end up being picked. BUT unlike regular jury duty you don't get credit for having served!

What happens if you just don't go.
I have gotten the letter for jury duty and just keep fogetting to mail it back.
How do they even know you go it?? what stops me from saying I never received it? Which could be a good possibility. They can't proof I did or didn't get it.

This was not Grand Jury, but my MIL kept throwing out the jury duty notices for my SIL (she got married, changed her name and moved to Queens). After a year or so, there was a warrant out for my SIL's arrest. She had to go to court with her marriage license and all sorts of proof that she didn't live in Suffolk. A couple weeks ago she got a notice again at my MIL's house (with her maiden name) for Federal jury duty, this time she wrote on it "No such person at this address" and mailed it back.

Re: GRAND Jury Duty
I got called for Grand Jury Duty a few years ago. I was pretty much told that it would be a month straight of Jury Duty. I got a letter from someone in HR which explained that I do not get paid for that many days of Jury Duty and that it would cause financial hardship for me.
I showed up the day on the summons and gave them a letter and they switched me to regular Jury Duty, of which I served 2 days before I was dismissed from Jury selection.

Re: GRAND Jury Duty
I loved Grand Jury- it was a month long vacation!!! My job paid me so it was amazing- I went for one month to Central Islip- some days we were only there like 2 hours, some days we were there the whole day.
I would hope if it's a financial hardship you can be dismissed.
