i've always tipped on the total, but recently saw a discussion where people said they do it on the subtotal.
I don't really understand why you'd only tip on the subtotal

So funny you posted this. Got into a debate with my friend the other night. I was always told to tip on the subtotal. Why would you tip on the tax?
She called me cheap for tipping on the subtotal.

At a resturnat I do it off the total. I do 20% and round up.
But my mom says you are supposed to do it before tax so she does it that way.
The way I look at it if I do it after tax then they get a little more than a 20% tip which of course benefits them

I always do it off the total, but sometimes the restaurant will list the tip amount for each percentage (15%, 18% and 20%) and it is always based off the SUBtotal.

Total but I know a lot of people do it on the subtotal so as not to tip on the tax.
I'm too lazy to really care and always over tip anyway so....

Total, because you are talking about an extra dollar or so on small bills. Maybe an extra 5-8 on large bills.

Total. I know I'm "tipping on the tax", but I don't look at it that way. It just makes me give more money to the server, and I always over-tip anyway.

Total. Unless you're eating an expensive meal (which I rarely am) the difference in terms of a tip wouldn't be that large.
I've never even thought about it actually.

Total. The way I see it...if a server gets more $$ from me and whoever else tips on the total, maybe that will make up for all the people who don't tip at all.

We tip on the total. But like many PPs who have posted, we are usually over tippers anyway. The difference is minimal and the server gets a little more. Feel like we make up for the bad tippers (if they tip at all)

The extra amount of tipping on the tax is
15% of 8.875% (average tip rate on tax rate) = 1.33%
So the amount of money involved is nominal.
Even on a $100 meal, it's less than an extra dollar and a half.
