Can I plant bushes at this time of year or do I need to wait until spring?
We had to rip out some bushes that had died for some reason #blackthumb 
Can I replace them now or do I have to wait for next spring?
I know nothing about gardening/landscaping and I really don't want the new ones we get to suffer the same fate as the old ones....

I've planted at this time. Depending on the type and how cold the winter is expected you might need to throw extra mulch around the ground where the roots are in the fall. And water evergreens a lot before the first frost. That will help fight against winter burn.

i would wait until the fall. that's a good time to plant things (end of oct/early november)
