Never been to Fire Island

Don't laugh but I've never been. I always went to Jones or Robert Moses. Anyway, is it worth taking the ferry and checking it out with two kids (4 and 7)?

not much to do with kids imo for an entire day or maybe at all. Others with kids can add.

I went for the first time last yr. A friend has two homes there, if i didnt have her home as a base I would have hated it. Nothing to do but eat or sit on the beach. Know, you cant bring food, music etc onto the beach. Otherwise, it was beautiful

That's only true for Ocean Beach. There are many different parts of FI, each with its own "personality". Ocean Beach has the most in the way of shops and restaurants, but if you just want to go to the beach for the day, there are some that are more family friendly with playground areas etc. Not exactly sure what's at the other beaches, but look into Davis Park, Atlantique, Watch Hill

We go to Sailor's Haven, and it's gorgeous. Best beach around! Hardly anyone ever there. They have a snack bar, ice cream, the sunken forest, the visitor's center, and HUGE shells to collect. We love it there. It's awesome. Nothing else there though...which is what makes it great! You take the Sayville Ferry, we do the 930am and take the 4pm home. You can bring food, boogie boards, etc. There are showers and bathrooms. If you go in the sunken forest, bring bug spray.

is there a fee for the beach? Or just the price of the ferry?

You just pay for the ferry. And I agree, Sailor's Have is great for the kids and the Sunken Forest trail is amazing.

$15 on the weekends but there is a small lot across the street that is free for Islip Town residents.

Question about Sailors Haven: Being the ticks are so bad this year, is it safe to go through the Sunken Forest? Or as long as you put bug spray on its okay? I've never been there and it looks beautiful.

Is it a pain to drag all your beach stuff (chairs, umbrella, etc) on the ferry?
How do you work it?

I think if you take the usual precautions, you're fine. It's a boardwalk/sidewalk path. We do use bug spray and I have the kids wear hats. It's truly a beautiful walk!

It's not bad. The deckhands will help you load and unload if you need them to. There are stairs down to beach once you get there, so just keep that in mind.

It's not the end of the world and it's certainly doable (I've done overnight trips to Fire Island, so I've had luggage), but I honestly find it annoying.

I wonder if I could use my beach cart. Like drag it down the stairs... lol

I would think with two people you could. If not, I've seen plenty of people leave carts or wagons at the top of the steps.

My friend brings her cart, and just thumps it down the stairs lol. I pack light. Backpack chair, beach bag, small chair umbrella (I quit bringing the full size since no one sits under it). Small cooler, kids bring boogie boards in huge mesh laundry type bag (fits 2 or 3 in one bag, $1.99 at Walmart), and a few sand toys. Easy peasy on the ferry, you get on and just leave everything downstairs and go sit upstairs if you want. It's all boardwalk to the beach, then stairs and there you are.

As far as ticks in forest...I don't know....we didn't go this year because of ticks and bugs, and I'm lazy to walk it lol but if you go......spray your hair with bug spray. I had a tick in my hair from my own back yard. The mosquitos are always bad in there. We do like to go through the forest and come out the beach end, then walk back to the main part of the beach.
