He didn't deserve this. And IMO this is why you stay the F out of N.Korea.

Reminds me of Michael Fay that got caned in Singapore for vandalism when he was 18 years old.

Do not mess around in other countries.

Exactly

Reminds me of that movie with Claire Danes and Kate Beckinsale - Broke Down Palace.
One of my favorite movies, but so disturbing.

Yes! That movie scared the shit out of me.

Otto Warmbier has died

He had been traveling in China and saw an advertisement for a company offering trips to NK. It was geared towards young people and claimed to be safe for US citizens. Ten other US citizens were on the tour.

IMO, the whole thing was bs. The video was probably fake and his confession was definitely coerced.

While NK claims to have returned him for humanitarian reasons, I assume they knew his death was imminent and didn't want him dying in NK. US doctors found no signs of botulism, but did find signs of traumatic brain injury. Which, to me, sounds like he was severely beaten.

Just a sad story all around.

Ugh, I feel so awful for his family. This poor kid, he didn't deserve what he got. I'm sorry that NK decided to return him only after he was already brain dead. Prayers for his family.

I have a feeling he did nothing wrong, even by NK standards- they just wanted to brutalize an American. A lot of really sick shit goes on in that country- if only he'd understood what he was walking into & decided against going. I can't imagine why anyone would want to go there.

A couple years ago I read Nothing To Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea by Barbara Demick. The author met and interviewed a few people who'd been able to escape- their experiences were really harrowing but living there was hell. It was a great read if anyone wanted to know more about NK.

They didn't find any signs he was beaten in any way. From what I read the brain injury was more likely due to a cardiac arrest. So something maybe caused him to stop breathing and then his heart stopped, and then in the time it took for him to be revived he suffered the brain injury. I'm assuming we'll never know what really happened to cause any of this.

While I feel for his family, and am sorry he passed. I think the take away is that Americans should not go to North Korea and that going was a bad idea in the first place.

Agree. There is nothing there for us.

I agree on most. The tour company he went through advertises it "as the trip your mother doesn't want you to take". They said it was safe for us citizens.

I also agree his confession was coerced. The video is so grainy and doesn't depict anybody clearly.

The drs said there wasn't a brain injury though. He didn't show signs up healing from a bruise, fracture, etc. they actually think he suffered a heart attack and his brain was without oxygen. A heart attack no doubt induced by his abusive treatment from NK.

I also agree the knew he was on deaths bed and didn't want him dying on their soil. They think they're won't be blood on their hands if so..which is not the case.

I'm actually quite surprised at how callous some of these posts sound. Of course he made some very poor choices but not poor choices that should have cost him his life. His poor parents, family and friends.

Travelling to North Korea is a poor choice and poor choices do sometimes cost people their lives.
My heart breaks for this kid and his family, as it is heartbreaking and infuriating. That being said, it was stupid to go to North Korea and that stupid choice cost him his life.

Great book but also a good reason to never go to North Korea. I'm sorry for him and his family but he should never have been there in the first place. Horrible to say but at least they got a body back to bury. They aren't left wondering what happened to him and if he is still alive.

Exactly. Drunk driving is a poor choice too. People do it and they die. And yes it's horrible for their families but it is avoidable. As was this....

Bad decision or not, he is one of US, an American and he was only 22. He didn't even do anything that would harm another human being.

As PP said - what he did wasn't something that would harm anyone else. I'm just surprised at the lack of compassion. If a heroin addict overdoses I am still so sad for them and their families. I have compassion - I don't just sit there and talk about the poor choices they made that led them to that fate. Yes, everyone knows what he did was stupid but the poor boy is dead now.

It doesn't matter. He was in another country with different laws. You don't go to places like NK and **** around like that and not expect serious consequences. People may think some of us are being callous but it's pretty known that NK is no joke. It was a stupid mistake and unfortunately he lost his life but he should have known better.

Agreed. It's almost like "Well what did he expect?" Chat Icon He was with a tour that was allegedly safe. Is it something I would do? No. Was it a bad decision? Probably. Did he deserve to be tortured and eventually die due to whatever he sustained there? Absolutely not! And it doesn't make it any less sad.

I am not one of the ones who were callous on this thread.
I think it's awful and he did not deserve to die. And of course I feel terrible for him and his family.
But I also think it was avoidable.
Just like you wouldn't go to Syria or Iraq right now.
And you can feel sympathy and emotion for someone while thinking what they did was dumb. It's not mutually exclusive.

Re: Otto Warmbier has died

You can be both compassionate towards another human being, (American or not, NOBODY deserves to go through what he went through, especially considering he did nothing to deserve it) but you can also question why someone made the choice to travel to a hostile territory knowing how they feel about our country. I can be compassionate towards a heroin addict and still question what drove them to the point of overdose. It's not callous. I don't think anyone said he deserved what he got. I certainly didn't. I stand by my original statement that this whole story is incredibly disturbing and sad.

When so many people in NK would give their left arm to escape that country, I think it's totally normal to question why an American would want to go visit.

I have a lot of sympathy for this guy and his family. I traveled through some developing countries as a college student and in my 20s, and I realize now at 34 (and a mom of one with one on the way) the dangerous positions I would have been in if I had encountered either violence or legal issues in these corners of the world. I didn't make any terrible decisions but I was a completely naive 20 year old -- I felt invincible and that cultural exchange would be worth any personal risk. I still really love to travel but I hope I can teach my children about how to do it responsibly and ethically.
