Norm for health insurance benefits to start with new job?

How long did you have to wait at your job for health insurance benefits to start?

What is the norm nowadays? No wait, 30 days, 60 days? Does it depend on the industry?

I had 1 job that I had to wait 30 days, but that was years ago.

Re: Norm for health insurance benefits to start with new job?

At my company you are covered from day one.
At others I have been with it was 30 days I believe.

It depends more on the company itself than the industry.
It's an individual thing

So let's say you start a job and you have to wait the 90 days? What do you do in the meantime?
Can you get Cobra if you left your previous job on your own or only if you were let go?

That wouldn't be a big incentive for me to leave my job to go work at a company where I'd be uninsured for 90 days.
Not the best way to attract talent away from competitors.

Every job is different. It's company policy, so there really is no "norm." It could be day 1, day 30, 60, 90, the first day after a full month of employment, etc, etc, etc.

Yes, when you lose insurance you are always offered COBRA

Yes, you can do COBRA. Many of the people I've seen hired didn't have health insurance to start with, so waiting 90 days wasn't a big deal to them. I paid the COBRA during the wait period for my first job (coming off my parents insurance), and since then I've been on my husband's plan so it wasn't a concern for me.

These were all small companies (2-10 employees) that aren't attracting that much "talent" anyway.
Most don't pay that well either and had reasonably high turnover rates.

Here is another thing. You have 90 days to opt INTO COBRA.

What that means is this:

If you don't need to go to the doctor in those 90 days DONT pay COBRA. if on day 89 you have to go to the doctor, accident, etc..you pay for the FULL 90 days, but you will still be covered.

What I did in my last job is not pay COBRA for the 90 days. I didn't have to go to the doctor so saved 90 days of COBRA payment.

Please make SURE to confirm this with someone in the know. But that's what I was told and I researched it.

You know I think I have heard that too.
That's a very good option to take.

Yeah, this is what we did. HR at my old job suggested it. It would have been $2400 for 2 weeks of insurance which even they thought was insane.

Btw, the 42 day wait was for a state job. Not a small company. Can't say they're attracting much "talent" at least in my department so maybe that's how they get away with it!
