Spinoff. Anyone love living on Long Island

Aside from the cost of living, I don't hate it here. All of our "stuff" is here-our family and friends, our favorite restaurants, our favorite parks and beaches, our church, etc. On the weekends we go on adventures, just checking out parks and preserves we've never been to before, or drive around.

The only thing killing me right now is my commute (which is not that long by comparison to some people, but with DH in Manhattan it's difficult). Maybe I'll be able to change that someday.

I like living on Long Island; my family and friends are mostly here, and I cannot imagine feeling happy if I lived far from them.

Also, we have access to so much from entertainment to emergency services. While the traffic and the crowds are bothersome to me, I think that is part of the deal with having so much around.

We left Long Island and moved to Queens to be closer to work (it's just DH and I). I would come back to LI in a heart beat. I love the beaches, that you get to drives places, Target, etc. I truly could go on forever. I miss Long Island a lot.

I love it here on LI. Beaches, East End, NYC, etc.

I could never live in the south or middle America. I have a house on Cape Cod so I get New England life in the summer but would not want to live there. I've traveled a lot and the only other place (in the US) I would consider living is southern CA, which is expensive like LI.

Yes I do but I live out east. Its a very different feel. I'd probably hate living in western Suffolk or Nassau. Everything just feels so jam packed. You may as well be in queens

I honestly think I would enjoy it more if the weather was better.
And by better I mean, more like Florida.

The beaches here cannot compare to Florida- esp the gulf coast, but they would be ok if only I could actually enjoy them for more than 2 to 2 1/2 months.
There were times this summer I'd be on the beach on a July morning- we go early- and have to wear a sweatshirt because I was cold. Umm, no.
Not in July on a beach.

I feel like yeah, we have these beaches so close, but they are untouchable for most of the year so it's a waste.

And of course it's way over crowded due to the constant building of homes, etc... which causes insane traffic.
But again I could deal with that better if I was dealing with it in a better climate.

I enjoy the beaches from April through September. I don't swim but I go there for lunch or whatever. Is nice at the beach besides just July and August??

I'm in Queens on the border of Nassau, but I consider Queens/Long Island pretty much the same since I'm so close. I love it here! Have no intention of going anywhere else. The ONLY thing that could make me ever consider it is the weather. I am a summer/beach girl, so the 2-3 months of warm weather is not enough for me anymore.

I feel the same way! I enjoy this area very much but I'd love to live in a warmer climate.

Re: Spinoff. Anyone love living on Long Island

I've only been here a year and my DD is only a year old so I'm not hip deep in LI life yet. Chat Icon But I do really like it. I'm a Queens girl born and raised, too, so it's very different, but mostly in a good way. I love my town. The first week we moved in, I waddled through the town, super pregnant, and saw a kid and his grandpa building a lemonade stand, a legit game of catch in the street with a father and son, and two little girls playing dress up in the driveway. I felt like I wandered into Pleasantville. Chat Icon But we're also walking distance to a movie theater, ice cream, burger place, supermarket, LIRR, CVS, playground, a short drive to a state park. It's borderline Queens/Nassau and a perfect blend of the two which is exactly what I wanted. The commuting takes some getting used to, but for the perks, it's worth it.

ETA: The taxes are crazy pants, too, but the school district I'm in is fantastic, so I'm excited about the prospect of public school for DD. And besides, while the taxes are high, the houses are less expensive. I looked in Queens and the cheapest house I could find in a desirable neighborhood was still $75k more than I paid on LI. And said house was basically ON the LIE on ramp, no backyard, and needed to be completely gutted to make it livable. No, thank you!

The beach is a bit of a drive for me, so yes, I am not going there unless I can be laying out in a bathing suit and going in the water.
I'm not into sitting on a beach in a sweatshirt or with closed toe shoes on getting full of sand.
Plus I hate wind and it's always windier and cooler by the water... so after the summer it's a no go for me. I hate being even a little cold.
