Do you want your DC to stay on LI?
Since we're on a theme lately...
Do you want DC to stay on LI?
I don't really care, but DW and I will probably leave LI after DC are done with school (or at least in college), so if DC are both in the same area of the country, we may move near them, or at least near one of them.

I dont care. Its his life to what he wants. I could never ask him to stay if he wanted to go.

Wherever my twins go they go and we will follow! If it's not in the same area then we move midway

I don't know. They can go wherever is best for them & their families. It's so expensive to live here. I am scared to think of how expensive houses and taxes will be in 25-30 years while salaries hardly increase. I wonder if they will be able to afford it.

DS can decide for himself. I left for college and then lived in 2 other major cities before moving back.

Re: Do you want your DC to stay on LI?
Ideally, I'd love to be near my kids when they grow up but I realize they will need to take their own path. I think being on LI makes it a lot harder for your kids to stay close and I REALLY do NOT want my kids living with me until they are 30 so it's just another reason why I'm looking to leave the island.
Once DH retires, I wouldn't mind following my kids if they settle in another part of the country. I'm down for a new adventure.

LI communities are a bit too homogeneous for my liking. I'd rather my DC be somewhere that's more reflective of a multicultural world.

Honestly I think it will be too expensive for the kids to leave here - they might have a better shot elsewhere. But it will be there decision.

Chances are I am not leaving until DS graduates and he is only in K. When he does I would like to move down to NC. If he wants to come, great. But our family is just DH, DS and I so there would be no one here for him.

I'm hoping we're gone before she starts school. I would strongly discourage her from moving here but in the end it would be her decision.

If he wants to leave, I'm ok with that. But chances aren't that great. My great-grandparents moved to the town I live in now in the 50's. Most of my grandfather's side of the family stayed here. Then their kids stayed here. I grew up in the town next door, both me AND my brother settled in the same town as our great-grandparents. Most of us never leave. So I'm ok with him following his heart and going wherever, but the track record with our family isn't in his favor.

I think it's really tough to start out here and I don't think I will be able to retire here comfortably. It's just DS and I so I plan to go where he goes !

I'm basically only here cause of my husbands work but if he decided to move, i'd be the first one packing. But as far as my dc, when she grows up she can stay or go if we are still here.

Re: Do you want your DC to stay on LI?
No. I have 2 boys close in age. I hope they make enough to live comfortably in NYC or Los Angeles. They have had the same career plan for years. one wants to be a doctor for children , the other an engineer. We plan to follow them. My hope is they both stick together or we will be doing a lot of flying back and forth. I can't wait to get off of LI! I will be mid to late 50's by the time they are both working full time. I better be retired by then!

I wanted them to be able to choose if they wanted to stay or not as opposed to being "stuck".

We are moving in about 2 yrs. Our DC are toddlers so they, of course, will be coming along. Due to DH'S job, we have to stay in state. When he finally retires, in about 20 yrs, we will probably move to the Carolinas. We hope that they will financially be able to afford to live wherever they like but I have a feeling if they don't follow, we will have an apartment wherever they are so we can visit.

Selfishly, yes. I live three blocks from my parents and it's a godsend. Realistically, I want them to be wherever will make them happy but it will be unbelievably hard for me if they're not close. If they're anything like DH, they won't be close by.

Re: Do you want your DC to stay on LI?
I'd hope she'd stay close with her family. If not in location but at least in relation. Not necessarily just me and DH, but her cousin, of which she only has one now, but I hope she has many in the future! And I only have DD now, but I hope she has a sibling in the future.

Do you want your DC to stay on LI?
I am hoping to go not too far from where my kids settle after college (or whatever they do). I want to be an active grandparent someday, not the kind that sends cards and visits once a year. That's my plan right now. It wont be for another 5-6 years if that.

Yeah me too, I'd really miss my kids if they lived far away. I love having family close by.
