If your DC breaks something ...
that belongs to someone else, do you offer to replace it?
DD's friend literally walked through my sliding screen door today and created a huge gash. Her dad, who saw it happen, barely apologized and did not offer to replace it.

Yes, if it were my child who broke or damaged something, I would immediately apologize and offer to replace it (after making sure my child was okay).
If it were at my house, and a friend offered to replace something their child broke, I would say absolutely not, and insist that I was just happy their child was okay and that accidents happen.

I agree with a PP about offering to replace something and not accepting offers. But, in this instance, he was probably shocked and concerned about his daughter.

Re: If your DC breaks something ...
Absolutely. And sorry, but I would take the money for the repairs from the family if I were you, if they offered. Aren't screens expensive? If the kid broke a glass or something minor like that, I would not accept an offer to replace. Just curious- How old is the child?

I mean accidents happen. Kids walk into screens, I did it when I was little. I wouldn't expect someone to offer to replace it, I would just be glad no one was hurt.

I agree. Plus, it's so easy to replace the screen yourself it's really not as big of an issue as you may think.

I agree, but as a parent I would totally apologize and offer to pay. Yes it was an accident, but it was someone else's stuff. First check if everyone is ok of course then offer to pay to have it fixed. If they decline I'd probably come by with cookies or something. If it happened at my house I wouldn't take the money.

I don't have kids. But if someone was at my house and a child broke something I would look at the situation. If the kid was told "don't go near the screen" and there was a malicious intent, yes I would expect the parent to at least offer to pay.
If it was an accident I would not expect. Accidents happen. Plus it's been SO cold out. No one is used to screen doors being open right now so I can see how she walked through it.
Could have happened to anyone.
What gets me is the parent not saying anything at all. Or barely anything. THAT would annoy me.

I would absolutely offer to replace or fix something my DC broke, especially a bigger repair like a screen door. It's so completely rude not to.

I would have definitely offered to pay and I would have felt terrible. If it happened at my house I am not sure if I would expect the person to offer to pay though. It's an accident.

I would not expect them to pay for it, I would offer as a parent but if it was my house I would never accept payment or even be bothered if they didn't offer.

Re: If your DC breaks something ...
That stinks. I wouldn't expect them to offer. If they did offer, I wouldn't accept. I would just be grateful the kid wasn't hurt. If it was my kid, I would offer depending on the circumstances.

Re: If your DC breaks something ...
If it were my DD that did it, I would 100% offer to pay.
If someone did it in my home and offered to pay, I wouldn't accept it.
But I think it's kind of the right "etiquette" to at least offer....
That's my 2 cents

Re: If your DC breaks something ...
As a parent, you need to at least acknowledge that your DC damaged something, and apologize. I agree with most of the posters here that I would offer to pay and/or repair anything my DC damaged, and I wouldn't accept any money if someone else damaged something. Depending on what was broken, I may accept help in repairing it. A large screen door is much easier to fix with an assistant. I had DS help me replace a screen door screen, and a second set of hands definitely helps. (He didn't damage the screen, but it was a good teaching moment.)
