I uncovered a scam!


In Brief:

Grieving property taxes
-Assessment Review Commission (OFFICIAL Nassau County OFFICE)
-Assessment Review Consultants (Company that grieves taxes on someone's behalf for a charge)
*PLEASE Note similar names, and SAME initials: ARC

-I filed independently. I got confirmation from County from an email address [email protected]. It had application # and date received.
-Received letter in mail yesterday from Assessment Review Consultants (also goes by ARC) thanking me for filing an appeal.
-I never authorized them to do this.
-I emailed both county and company regarding this. (It was after hours and I felt I had to do something immediately)
-Company sent me an email stating "we filed protectively on your behalf" BS!
-I called county to confirm my independent appeal is still active. They confirmed company withdrew their application this morning (and that they did not have my signature on file authorizing their filing on my behalf).

Unsuspecting people may be getting scammed by this company. This issue was brought up to the deputy commissioner. Please please be careful. This company is sending messages to people saying they filed with them and they did not. They are also sending people letters saying that there are 2 appeal applications active with county and that they need to sign an affidavit saying they want them to grieve it for them. BE AWARE OF ASSESSMENT REVIEW CONSULTANTS. BE VIGILANT FOR ANY MAIL YOU GET WITH THE INITIALS ARC.

I normally wouldn't say something like this but you should contact the writer at news day who wrote the story about the corrupt tax grievance thing. A lot of seniors will fall for that.

I live OOS but my mom who's on LI called me about something that sounds very familiar to this. I file independently for them so I told her to not sign and to throw it out. Hope that was enough. So unethical that these companies try to purposely scam people by making their documentation semm like official government/county documents and using wording that can be easily misinterpreted. I'm guessing it's within the parameters of the law but these are predatory practices. So wrong.

So I just checked and I got an email from the same company after I filed. Is this wrong? Or just the letter is wrong? Should I call someone? Sorry, we're new to this.

Did you file with this company?
I filed independently and they tried to say that I filed with them.

If you actually filed with this company, there is nothing for you to do.

I filed myself, on the nassau county website but ARC is named on the website...

I throw all mail away bc too many scams going on. I go directly to county sites and file/print from there.
Without seeing the form this sounds similar to the Star program that was deceptive to homeowners. If you filled out ARC (not Nasssau County) I would contact Attorney Gerneral. I am not making reference to companies that file for you and clearly state there is a fee.

They both go by ARC. That is the problem.
