"Back in MY day..."

Do you ever tell DC, nieces, nephews, younger coworkers, etc about "Back in MY day..." we had this, or didn't have that, etc?

I'm often telling DC about things we had or didn't have.
"Back in my day, we couldn't pause shows, so if we had to go to the bathroom, we had to coordinate it with the commercials".

"Back in my day, we didn't have cell phones, so if sports practice was let out early, we just had to wait until the scheduled time our parents were planning to get us".

"Back in my day, to Google something, we had to use those Encyclopedias you see on the shelf there".

Re: "Back in MY day..."

Back in my day ...

if I wanted to hangout with my friends, I'd have to go ring their door bell and actually speak to their parents.

Respect was something we were taught and we used it everyday.

I got a small allowance for doing chores. Not just because.

We played outside. Every day. Coming home filthy. And it was glorious!

And omg recording your favorite song on the radio with your new blank tape! If the DJ spoke you would get so Poed

Same goes for having to call someones house on a land line, and speak to the parent or whoever answered the phone to ask for your friend. Phone manners are dead thanks to texting.

Ha ha... just the other day I was telling my daughter that if we had to be picked up early from after school whatever, our parents would answer the phone (with no caller ID!) and get...

"You have a collect call from... momcomegetmefromschoolthanks. Do you accept the charges?"

She was so confused. I had to explain what a pay phone was in the first place.

Re: "Back in MY day..."

I say it to a lot of the 20 somethings that I work with.

From music... old sitcoms.... Payphones...

GPS.... I really don't know how we did with out them...

I was just saying you had to give such detailed instructions if you didn't have a map...

Go 4 stop signs... make a right at the deer crossing sign. If you see a gaggle of turkeys you went to far...

This is great... yes to all of this... esp the Collect calls from the school payphone.

DH and I reminisce about even as recently as 10 years ago when we started dating... going to Blockbuster and getting a few movies and snacks (miss this SO much), dialing 411 to get someone's number or dialing moviephone to get the movie times if you were out somewhere... only 10 years ago!

Yes! And even 10 years ago, there were no smart phones. Your cell phone was just a phone and I remember I had one that when you wanted to text you had to cycle through the letters. They had no alphabetical keyboard
1 was like A B and C- so to type a C you had to hit the 1 button like 3 times.
OMG that was nuts!

Re: "Back in MY day..."

I was just telling my 7 year old the other day that at his age my parents sent me to Florida on a plane all by myself to visit my grandparents. He was asking for everything and so needy so I told him I actually flew by myself at his age.
After thinking about it more there is NO WAY I would send my son off on his own now. Crazy how things change. My son can't do a thing without asking and I rode my bike to my friends house at his age.

Yes all the time with my kids! Usually to make a point about how spoiled they are.

As in "Back in my day we had a tiny black and white tv in the kitchen so stop fighting for who is going to use the newer iPad!"

Just today I was trying to explain corded phones and pay phones to my 4yo! Middle country library has a nice exhibit right now with all different phones so we were checking them out.

Re: "Back in MY day..."

Just thought of snow days and listening to the radio for the DJ to say the school. I felt like Pat-med never closed and were one of the few that were always open or a delayed opening. Now it's always one of the first ones to close.

Waiting online to buy concert tickets at the butt crack of dawn at our local video reflections!

ALL. THE. TIME. Chat Icon

Back in my day...............

We had to watch whatever cartoon was on the TV because there was no such thing as streaming. ANNNNND there was no pause or rewind or record on the fly. If I wanted to actually record something I had to spend 45 minutes setting up the VCR, making sure I chose the right tape, and then praying I had enough room left on it to record the whole show!! LOL

We had no cell phones...............and we lived to tell the tale. Imagine, just going about your day living life and NOT being on a phone 24/7!!

There was no such thing as "touch screens" or iPads

We had to actually GET UP to change the channel and sometimes, we even had to adjust the ANTENNA on top!!! Chat Icon

There was no such thing as Google, my DD is shocked by this!! We had to actually go to the library, find a book, and look something up. Needless to say, we spent a lot of time wondering about things and not having any answers to our questions. Chat Icon

Kids played outside. Unattended. ALLLLLL day long. And we only came home to eat lunch and then again when the streetlights came on because that meant it was time to wrap it up for the day.

Had to literally wait YEARS for a movie in the theaters to come to HBO so you can see it. And you had to wait even longer for it to get to video. By the time you were able to even catch a movie you missed in the theaters you didn't even care anymore because you were so much older at that point and had outgrown the desire to see it!! Chat Icon

Had to sit by your stereo waiting for your favorite song to come on so you could hit record in time to get it on your cassette tape............only to be annoyed when the radio host talked over the beginning of the song.

LOLOL Yes!! I remember picking up pics are the drive through Fotomat as a kid with my parents. Remember those little blue and yellow houses?????

Also, you were very particular about what you took a picture of because you had maybe 24 shots on a rolls of film and you had to pay to develop them. Nothing worse then spending money to develop a roll of film and every pic sucked!! LOL

Re: "Back in MY day..."

When we go to my FIL's house, he does not have the DVR option with his cable box.

DD gets annoyed that she can't pause or rewind live TV.

She also says- I want to watch.........
And expects me to be able to go to on demand or a dvr list and just put it on.

Soooo spoiled.

Re: "Back in MY day..."

I bring this up all the time when my daughter is whining about research. Back in my day...we couldn't just look stuff up on Google. We had to go to the library and look through these films called microfiche for an article and spiral through it page by page until you were dizzy.

Or even buying something from catalogs...
You actually had to call people and speak to them...

This! And then when you finally FOUND the article, it only had one or two paragraphs related to what you were writing your report on, so all of that time, effort and work was for nothing! Chat Icon

OMG, my parents had a full set of Funk & Wagnall's Encyclopedias in the closet and every single report I ever did came out of those!

I also used to take the public bus (*gasp*) to Robert Moses every day by myself when I was like 14-16. My kids can't imagine taking public transportation.

Oh, and pen pals were a big thing when I was a teen in the 80's. Like writing actual letter, and mailing them. To a stranger!!

I know. My parents thought nothing of sending me on a plane and as long as I was home when the street lights came on I was good.

Yes I had a few of those!
I used to write to them on my Lisa Frank stationary with my glittery gel pens.
LOL
