I moved into the apartment in my parents basement after college and was pretty much on my own then (paid them rent, did my own food shopping/cooking, etc). Then I moved into an apartment with my DH (then BF) until we got engaged and got married. Then we bought our house.

How long have you ever been alone........

See, I can't imagine my life without that alone time. But admit it was unusual since it wasn't just single time, it was alone time. There's a difference. That said, I would not be who I am. Know what I know and be capable of what I can do.

I never could have just stayed at home and didn't WANT to live with my parents - who would? That mentality doesn't exist here. You grow up and move out. That's the plan. You never, ever want to be 'that kid' who still lives at home after High School and college.

And dating age? Wait, you still live at home. How.. umm cute? Nah. I could never date a guy who lived with this parents. That seemed so .. um pathetic? Sorry can't think of a less offensive word but realize that's too harsh so less harsh but in that field. Ironically my husband lived with his grandmother but that seemed loyal but clingy. Hahaha.

I may have lived off very little but still better than living at home. Then again I guess that's why I didn't have nest eggs or fancy stuff. But it was worth it.

But my alone time was extreme. I mean I never realized how fast time flew then. How far I drifted from friends and family. I became a recluse. I came out for holidays but that's it. I think my Dad thought I was suicidal for a bit. He asked my brother to do drive-bys at my apartment to see if I was there (I found out later). Honestly, I was fine. Just me doing me.

I'd go to the movies all day on Saturday. Sunday was all day reading and laundry. Meh.

I really miss the days I could go hours without speaking a word to another person or without having to deal with idiots. Pre-Cellphone days. I could disconnect and disappear.

ETA: those were the days I literally travelled. I went to other cities by myself. just up and left. called my dad at the airport "going to Chicago today, be back in a few days" or "today I feel like Philly, get it.. feel like Philly" haha

Going to the movies by myself? LOL cakewalk to getting up and traveling to other cities just on a whim. Got stuck in a few airports, stranded a few times in small cities at gas stations, stayed at random hotels a few times. Things I guess that all taught me lessons.

Yes. After college I lived with a BF for less than a year. It wasn't a good relationship so he moved out and I lived by myself for a year and loved it. Dated, went out with friends, worked and did lots of happy hours... It was awesome to come and go as I please. After a while I wanted a change so moved to Hoboken with someone I found online. She became one of my best friends. We lived together for about 4 to 5years till she moved to Chicago for work and I got engaged to DH so moved in with him to LI. I didn't meet DH immediately. I enjoyed the single life of dating and going out and had a summer shore house with friends for a few summers too.

I guess from 2013 until 2015 I live with just my DS after I left my ex husband and every other weekend he was with his dad.

It was glorious lol

There were weekends where I would come home Friday and just stay in watching movies, walking my dog, reading books and sleeping. It was great. I learned to do my hair and make up, lol.

Now I live w my SO, and every other weekend we don't have kids, and he works during the day so I do still get some time to myself, it's sort of the best of both worlds

Odd woman out here...

I've pretty much never not been alone. My mother left me when I was 14 and I don't know my father. I lived in a foster situation for about 2 years from 16-18, and then I've been on my own alone again ever since and I'm 36 now. And, to make me even odder, I've never dated. :)

I'm not a totally socially awkward weirdo, I just made the choice to work on myself and to be comfortable with who I am before getting into a relationship.

I don't mind being alone, though I would like to get married one day. I look forward to having someone to complement me and who I am vs. looking for someone to "complete" me. I have too many friends and family members that have gotten into terrible relationships because they were running from something and so desperate to be loved. Statistically, I am an anomaly. Based on my family situation, I *should* be a single mom with several kids, on welfare, barely getting by. Instead, I have a great job at a great company, I own my own home, have a solid set of friends, and a really cute dog.

I had my own apartment for a year in between living with my parents and moving in with DH (who was my boyfriend at the time). It was awesome and I'm so glad I had that year of complete independence.

I lived alone between the ages of 24 and 32. During that time I dated and had a few non-serious/short term relationships. I met DH when I was 31 and we moved in together 7 months later just after my birthday.

My life now is what I always wanted but I do miss those days of having my own place.

I lived alone for about a year and a half but I wasn't alone. I was in grad school--I had a great group of friends and I was dating my DH. I lived in the same town as my parents and saw them about once a week. I loved living alone- I am glad I had the experience. My DH travels a lot for work
Part of the year and until we had our dd I had a lot of time to focus on me.

Never. I went from parents house to away at college with roommates to parents house to living with dh. I am alone a lot as dh has worked the opposite shift as me since shortly after we got married.

I had my own apartment for a year and LOVED it. Moved out of my parent's house, lived alone for a year then moved in with DH when we got engaged.

eta- I'm not sure what exactly you mean by alone. I've never been in a situation where I didn't have family and friends very close by.

I was really alone for about 1 year. First apartment. No serious boyfriend. I really enjoyed having that time. I've had 2 apartments on my own but had a boyfriend during most of it so I don't feel like that really counts Bc he was there a lot and I was at his place a lot.

But for that 1 year... it was great. I got to know me. Not me w my family or me w my boyfriend. Just me. I too spent full weekends in. Watching movies, organizing, sleeping, eating microwave popcorn for dinner!

Right now is the first time I've been alone (7 months in). I lived with my parents, was barely single after high school (two months maybe?) and then moved in with my fiance. I consider myself alone but I really live in an apartment in my parent's home but I do everything alone.. it's weird but also freeing.

I was living alone from 23-29. I started dating my now DH at 25, but I lived by myself. I really loved the two years completely on my own. I loved living alone. I know I had friends that never would or could have, but it was awesome. Now that I have my DH and two daughters, I still leave the TV on when I'm cooking dinner or cleaning up because it was my background noise when I lived alone.

Never. I met my husband early on during college so I went from being home with my parents to dorming to living with him.

About a year and half - from 20-22
Left my boyfriend and moved in with roommates - but not like my roommates were my family.
I was in South Carolina with no relatives nearby at all and didn't really date anyone steady.
It was a very crazy time and I partied like a rock star.

I lived on my own in a new state without knowing anyone for two years after college for a job. I was 21-23. Some times I loved it, but some times I hated it. I had a boyfriend for one of the two years, and I really liked discovering myself and who I was. But there was a time when I was really lonely and that made me incredibly sad. I would not change the time, and really think that everyone should live on their own for a year. It makes you appreciate yourself more.

Never lived alone, went from parents house to married.
Even if I had moved out of my parent's before DH was in the picture house I never would have been alone in a true sense. I am too close with my family, friends, and even coworkers to not see them on a regular basis.
I think this is almost the oppposite but I think I am not an alone person since I can by shy sometimes, it takes me a while to warm up to people /making small talk with new people stresses me out . Once I warm up to people I am not shy at all.

For the past year and a half I've sorta lived alone in the city. I have a roommate but she's literally never home so it's like I'm alone. Before I lived alone in Queens for 8 years.

I feel alone in the city. I know 2 people in my neighborhood but don't really hang with them. All my friends are married, have kids and basically live in LI or Queens (more LI)

I haven't been in a relationship in about 3 years as well. But I've always done tons of things alone. I do wish I had a friend in the neighborhood to do things with since there's plenty to do in the city.
