Here is the other thing I take issue with, for those who have shared the viral #notmymarch post on FB. The woman shared a million reasons why these marches didnt represent her, one of which was all of the women around the world who are marginalized. Suddenly, when convenient, you invoke the people around the world. When all I have heard is, "take care of our people first".....now the rest of the world matters to you? When it is convenient?
Did that woman happen to notice that there were marches all over the world? And that they weren't all necessarily protesting Trump's policies, but policies in their own countries?
I marched, not to represent "all women" but to speak up for the policies that are important to me, even if they don't affect me personally. I'm not gay, but I stand up for LGBTQ rights. I'm not disabled, but I support those who are. And so on...

Re: Why are people having problems with yesterday's marches?
I don't know but someone was just nitpicking on my FB thread about people leaving their signs "trash" there...honestly, no one says a word about the mess on New Year's Day or after a ticker tape parade...this was a peaceful situation that did not seem to have much reported bad side..unless you are the Trump admin. '
I've seen the same type of complaints! NYPD told us to put signs inside the barriers so that clean up crews could come collect them. Part of getting city permits for this sort of thing is that sanitation handles clean up. Trash bins everywhere along 5th Ave. were overflowing.

Leaving the signs is another act of protest. You leave the signs so that all the messages people carried that day are seen together- it's almost like an art installation. It gives people who weren't involved a feel for the event and allows people who participated to reflect.
I knew that. The person complaining did not.

Re: Why are people having problems with yesterday's marches?
Because people have a problem with everything. Everything. You breathe too loud, someone has a problem with it. You parent differently then they do, they have a problem with it You wear your hair a certain way, have a tattoo, get married, stay single, have kids, don't have kids, have 1 kid it's not enough, have 3 kids or more, it's too much. Your march, you don't march, you vote, you don't vote...
People take issue with EVERYTHING lately.
And they probably have always been like this but we just see it now more because everyone thinks their opinion is very important now that they can put it on social media
I love when people update their FB status to some long diatribe about their peronal opinion on what's going on in the world, the election, the Golden Globes, the Superbowl, the media, etc.... I always feel like saying- why do you think anyone needs to see a public paragraph about your opinion on whatever? Thanks for the editorial.

I agree. It's so stupid. I have said this before- years ago two friends could be of different political parties and have no issues. Today with social media, people get unfriended for difference of opinion. Really? Do we all have to think alike?

One problem I can think of is, were people prevented from going for treatments like chemo or dialysis because they had trouble getting around? How about fire/ambulance/police responses? This is always my concern. People have the right to protest, but when you interfere with normal flow of traffic, it's not fair to everyone else imo.
I live in the city and as much as I wanted to march myself, I had to go to LI to help my parents move. We drove right through Midtown and had no issues with traffic at all, we just avoided going right by Trump Tower but that's not really different than any other day --- traffic on a Saturday afternoon is always bad and I was surprised at how well traffic was moving so close to the march.

For me, it's not a difference in opinion that bothers me. It's the constant berating of people who didn't vote your way (and this goes for both sides). I had to unfollow a ton of people because I couldn't stand looking at my newsfeed any longer. I don't accept nasty, negative comments about any fellow human just because they believe in something different then what you believe in.

I honestly have unfollowed some. Even people that are conservative! Just the annoyance of seeing the same thing- day after day. Just complaning about everything. It's too much. I rather see pics of adorable kids and nice vacations. And food too!

I had to call reinforcements to hold me back this morning lol. People who wanted to group together all the peaceful marchers with the few jerks who were violent on Friday. It went on from there but it took every ounce of self control to stay out of it.

Re: Why are people having problems with yesterday's marches?
A few thoughts as I too attended the march. It was extremely peaceful and friendly and the atmosphere was one of love and solidarity more than anger. There were a bunch of kids and they were cheered. There were also barricades up between the streets and the sidewalks so that people could get through to the surrounding stores. People in those stores had signs and were cheering us on! Businesses in the surrounding area were packed! While it's possible your friends story is true I think its likely to have been exaggerated and if protesters did curse at her I would not be surprised if it was in response to behavior on her part (which it seems it may have been). We cut in and out of the main march to try to walk a little faster at times and marched in the street, walked on the sidelines, cut through from one side to the other, and never had any issues. I was a little nervous but I was really happy with how peaceful the march was. As far as it shutting down the city, I believe they were letting through traffic across 42nd on the avenues --- I saw traffic waiting and the march up 42nd went much slower than down 5th which was closed off for the portion from 42-55th.

This reminds me of people lumping all Trump supporters together with the radical a-holes though. Unfortunately people are always going to focus on the worst of any group. The bad apples always ruin it for everyone.

Trump supporters supported Trump and at the end of the day decided his behavior was acceptable and they wanted him to be our President. In that capacity they can be grouped together.
