I dunno...it kinda sounds like you want a regimented school setting and that's not what they do. My DC is 3 and in a preschool program and they have 0 work, 0 homework...they are learning socialization, alphabet, numbers, colors, songs, etc. I wouldn't be happy if they were forcing work that they weren't even ready for. I think your expectation is way off.
I agree completely.
I agree! My DS is almost 3 and I can't imagine him doing those things. I also feel like there's only a very brief period of time where kids get to be truly carefree.

Just on the handwriting, there are a lot of different schools of thought on when it is appropriate to teach handwriting. I actually would not like a program that taught handwriting that early. There are other things they can do to develop fine motor skills that will prepare them to learn to write at a more developmentally appropriate age.
I totally agree.
I agree. My twins are in pre k and they don't even do all that
They are learning through play and loving it

I understand you OP! My son goes to 3 year old preschool & it's not too academic yet... mostly learning to play with each other, share, cooperate, follow the teacher's instructions, pay attention, etc.. that kind of thing. Which are important skills too. Plus they have a routine every day which I think is great for kids their age to get used to a school setting. They do have circle time twice a day which I think is really the teaching time when they do numbers, seasons, weather, days, months, the teacher reads them books & they talk about it. They also do hands on stuff like puzzles & cooking & simple science projects.
I guess that's about all I can expect from a 3 year old program, but I think he's ready to start writing and basic math/reading so I work on these things at home with him. His school doesn't give homework, so I make my own worksheets for him (tracing letters, comparing sizes, drawing a line to connect things that match, simple adding with pictures... that sort of thing) & he really looks forward to it & asks to do his homework at night  (I know that won't last too long haha!)
Next year he'll go to their UPK which I don't think is very academic either, which bothers me a little bit, so again I will be teaching him what he needs to know at home & giving him homework at home. People might not agree with it & think he's too young, but I know my kid & I know he's ready to be challenged so why not give him these skills if I can & if he's ready? I thought about putting him in a private pre-k for the year to get him ready for kindergarten, but he really likes the school he's in now, so I will probably keep him there for UPK & then just work on certain skills with him at home.
Anyway, I do understand your desire for school to be more rigorous even at 3 years old.... I don't know if you'll be able to change what they choose to do but there are ways to get around it a little bit! Or check out other schools & see what's out there. Good luck!!!

Dear Lord I wouldn't be asking for homework at 3 years old!!! Elementary HW is already too much! My DD preschool gives optional HW, she only does it if she sees my older child doing HW. Socializing and play is the most important part of learning at this age..

My thought is that you're expecting too much of 3 year olds. They learn through play and exploration with the environment. They should play with clay and put together puzzles to development fine motor skills, not sit with a handwriting book. And I certainly wouldn't want homework! There is little research supporting its use in elementary school settings, let alone for a 3 year old. Instead of doing "work", she needs to play with others and socialize in order to help develop flexible thinking and problem solving skills. This will help her later with her executive functioning ability. She needs to count blocks on her own to develop a number sense not memorize what numbers look like. I have a 3 year old as well. I get the pressure of feeling like she's in "school" and she should be doing "work" but educational research tells us that this does not help children in the long run. These early years of exploration help prime their brains for later learning. Here are the Pre-K Standards if you want to know what your daughter should know going into kindergarten.

IMO, 3 is too young to introduce writing. Developmentally, the correct pencil grip and dexterity to manipulate pencil doesn't develop until age 4. I am a teacher and trust me, I had anxiety. The OT at my school
me off the ledge. My son just turned 4 in Oct. He started U-PK in Sept. He is one of the 3 youngest in the class. He is doing school readiness stuff now and is learning so much! I can see the pencil grip evolving just as my friend the OT told me it would. I see he is now able to write most letters both upper and lowercase. He knows shapes, colors, patterns, rhyming words, and they are now working on sight words.
I would wait for him to enter the 4 year old program. He will be ready.

And there is some variability. DS was not ready to write til 5 (he was in K at the time, even though he went to a great prek that tries to get them ready earlier). No issues... he's reading 2 grade levels above and is writing fine at 1st grade!
DD on the other hand, can write and read beautifully (just turned 5), but she's a girl and a Jan birthday. Comparison is not fair. She didn't start writing til 4 months ago!

3 is really young. I would not be concerned at all. Play based preschools are great and age appropriate. I would be bothered if a preschool was pushing writing on my 2-3 year old.
