1/20/17 and I am watching
If you visit Jared Yates Sexton's Twitter feed, he was giving play by play of what was going on around him at the inauguration. It was disgusting. The things being said by Trump supporters, the sexist, racist, homophobic comments, were appalling.
Trump has condoned this behavior. They are saying these horrible things in his name, at his inauguration, and not once has he said that these people do not represent his beliefs, or tell them to stop.

I'm over the whole "half the country voted for him, too bad" line. Half the country did NOT vote for him. Yes, he won, but it was not the landslide he was claiming. It was one of the smallest Electoral College victories in history. Hillary won the popular vote by 2.9 million. If you tack on the approximately 6 million 3 party votes, that leaves about 72 millions people who did NOT vote for Trump. And that also does not include the people who did not vote at all.

I didn't watch- I had some errands I wanted out of the way before DD got home from school but I did see the clip where the Trumps got out of the car and Donald went right over to the Obamas without waiting for Melania. Then I saw a photo from behind of her with an Obama on either side, each with an arm around her. For the first time I felt badly for her because it seems like he's not even thinking of her. She did look beautiful in a Jackie O kind of way (which always works IMO)
I saw a clip of them dancing their first dance as President and First Lady on Instagram before and they just looked so forced and awkward together. It might be because neither one of them can dance and it just looked so uncomfortable and unnatural, but I just did not get a vibe of a happy, in love couple. At all.

I do live in the US, and yes this man is president of the US - but that does not make him my president - it only makes him president of the country I live in. I do not agree that a man who has been divorced as many times as he has supports family values. I do not think a man who inherited wealth has any clue how low income people survive in this country, and how the middle class is shrinking. I do not agree that being the star of your own reality tv show gives you the right to fondle women without their consent. I do not agree that the disabled, people of color, and minorities are less than. I do not believe in privatizing Social Security.
I believe in climate change and the need to protect the environment. I believe that what happens with a woman's body should be up to the woman herself. I believe in public education. I believe in health care for poor people. I believe in prenatal care for pregnant women. I believe the government should pay back the money the Bush administration borrowed from the Social Security coffers. I believe in civil rights and Title IX. I believe that what happens between two consenting adults in private is nobody's business - least of all the government's.
In short, I do not believe in ANYTHING this man has stated he stands for, and I believe in many things he has cast aspersions against. So, no, he is not my president, is is just the president.

Well if someone did not vote, their choice was for their voice to mean nothing. So why mention those people? And the end result is that he won, whatever way you dice it. This is how voting works in America. This isn't some new process that just came about in 2016. Just like all of us who did not want Obama for 4 or 8 years had to accept it. Such is life.

You do know I have already moved (+10 years ago)? I still have a say in the political process. I even get a larger tax threshold, which I fall into (I file, but I have not had to pay because of this threshold and double taxation rules; DH is not a citizen), and I still get a vote. I guess you don't care how your fellow Americans are treated overseas?
Telling someone to leave achieves nothing. They still get a vote. Someone should not be told "don't like it? leave." It's offensive.

I deactivated it because I wanted to refrain from getting into bickering. Since a handful of you typically bait everyone who differs in view into, in defend their choice of who to vote for. OBVIOUSLY he has been elected and we have to accept that. What we don't have to accept is the direction his policies are taking based on the rhetoric of the campaign followed by the parade of awful cabinet appointments and initiatives already beginning in Congress. "Not my president" means that we intend to fight his ideas because they don't represent the POPULAR MAJORITY. I know for the Trump voters who got their way that sounds trivial, but it's not. Everyone will be affected by the direction of his governance, and for the majority, it is against their will. He has broken recent records for low approval rating of a president at inauguration. That matters. He has no mandate or soft power. I'm surprised that you're surprised that people are fighting so hard to resist him.
And this notion that everyone should just take his bullsh*t lying down because he's the president and we should respect him is, frankly, un-American. I seem to remember a LIF poster starting a huge FB thread about how she would like to (forgive me if I get the wording wrong) "smack the sh*t out of" the post-election protesters, yet the founding fathers made sure freedom to assemble was on a short list of 10 basic constitutional rights. (Does that include right to violence and destruction? No, but the vast majority of protesters have been peaceful but ignored by the media, who would rather blow up a controversial story) Thomas Jefferson would be ashamed at this somewhat fascist pressure to STFU and accept this, particularly since DJT has demonstrated an ongoing disrespect for our most basic American democratic principles.
So, congrats, you voted for him and you got your way, but don't ask the rest of us to like it or be quiet. Those who would choose to preserve civil rights in the face of a bigot-president and economic justice in the face of a billionaire cabinet and trickle-down tax plan despite the choice made by a meager 25% of the eligible electorate will operate within the system of checks and balances to resist his agenda. That, like the free election, is also a vital component of this democracy. Please stay in your lane.

I seem to remember a LIF poster starting a huge FB thread about how she would like to (forgive me if I get the wording wrong) "smack the sh*t out of" the post-election protesters, yet the founding fathers made sure freedom to assemble was on a short list of 10 basic constitutional rights. (Does that include right to violence and destruction? No, but the vast majority of protesters have been peaceful but ignored by the media, who would rather blow up a controversial story) Thomas Jefferson would be ashamed at this somewhat fascist pressure to STFU and accept this, particularly since DJT has demonstrated an ongoing disrespect for our most basic American democratic principles.
So, congrats, you voted for him and you got your way, but don't ask the rest of us to like it or be quiet. Those who would choose to preserve civil rights in the face of a bigot-president and economic justice in the face of a billionaire cabinet and trickle-down tax plan despite of the choice made by a meager 25% of the eligible electorate will operate within the system of checks and balances to resist his agenda. That, like the free election, is also a vital component of this democracy. Please stay in your lane.

When Trump does something that is worthy of respect I will respect him - simply holding an office doesn't entitle him to it - but as of right now -
This is a man who openly bragged about sexually assaulting women. This is a man who mocked a disabled journalist in front of a huge crowd. This is a man who discussed shooting Muslims with bullets dipped in pig blood. This is a man who publicly insulted the parents of a US Muslim soldier killed in Iraq. This is a man who re-tweeted material sent to him by white supremacists. This is a man who for years played upon blatant racism by suggesting that President Obama was not a US citizen. This is a man who favored banning individuals from entering the US based on their religion alone. This is a man who, at the age of 46, looked at a 10-year old girl and bragged that he would be ”dating her in 10 years.” This is a man who called a female journalist a ”bimbo.” This is a man who called a Latina contestant in one of his beauty pageants ”Miss Housekeeping” (playing on racist stereotypes of Latinos as domestic servants). This is a man who defended the size of his penis in a nationally televised debate. This is a man who in 1989 took out full-page ads in several New York newspapers calling for the execution of 5 youths (four of whom were under 16, and one 16), all of whom were later proven to be innocent.
I pulled this list from an op ed but it speaks volumes as to this person's character.
