Being this is a big Birthday trip for your DH that YOU originally planned; I think First Class Seats....why not? Especially since its a Red Eye; most people sleep anyway.
If it makes you feel better; let them know that First Class Seats are another part of your Birthday gift to him; so they don't feel slighted or offended in any way.
Enjoy.

I would go to first class and not think twice about it.
Do people really socialize on airplanes anyway? You can barely hear with all the wind noise!

Re: a traveling with friends wwyd
I say if DH is the one that doesn't want to do it then don't it's his birthday. Use the money for something extra special on the vacation. If he's on board with it then do it.
I would do it since it's a special birthday; however, if it was regular vacation with friends then no.

As someone who would never be able to book first class tickets, I think I would feel a little offended. I don't know if it's rude exactly, but it would feel a little like you're showing off that you can afford it. I totally understand why you would want to book first class and I definitely don't fault you for that. But I'm just trying to explain how your friends might see it.
We are not trying to show off that we can afford it, but our lifestyles are a little different. We don't have 2 children in college like they do. This was a special trip I planned for DH's big birthday. We told them we were going and they said they wanted to come along. It's not like we "invited" them but we were certainly very happy they wanted to join us.
This will only be on the way home on a red-eye flight.
You should have given this additional information in the beginning! Make a world of difference on responses. In this case since you had trip planned first as special present and they decided to come after these plabs were already made, it's fine you are in first class. If the situation was that you planned this together, than yes it would be rude of you to sit in first class and you would be showing off.

On a joint vacation you are not going to want to spend EVERY. SINGLE. MINUTE. together. Go first class and forget about it.

I think it's fine. What if you are using miles to upgrade? That is not showing off. Flying stinks- do anything you can make it more comfortable for yourselves. As a previous poster pointed out, it is not likely you would all be sitting together hanging out on the flight anyway.

additional information makes no difference to me, if your FRIENDS are mad or see it as showing off that you fly first class then they are strange/jerks lol

I would let them know and give them the option. Its a plane ride. everyone is going to relax and have head phones on and not talk , I don't think it really matters.

Not rude at all....
it's not like you talk on the plane. I feel like the engines are so loud. DH and I don't even talk on the plane.

I would sit with them in coach - we have flown a lot with friends and never sat in different classes.

Re: a traveling with friends wwyd
If my friends wanted to go to first class and I wasn't able to join them it wouldn't bother me at all. I would want them to go and I'd feel awful if they felt they couldn't upgrade because of me. I'd insist. If it were me though, I would feel guilty leaving them behind and would feel too showy. I know there isn't much socialization going on and you're not sitting together anyway but I'd feel guilty having the more comfortable seating and all the extras. But since this is part of your DH's birthday celebration and you already planned it that way I say go for it!

Re: a traveling with friends wwyd
Let them know you are flying business class and they are welcome to fly business with you guys or economy.
Is the price difference between classes that much difference?
Even though you said if you sat in business you'd take their bags, they were planning on spending $ for that. And if they are considering upgrading to economy plus, the difference might not be that much more for them to fly business too.
I'd be bummed if my friends where in business and me in economy but I wouldn't think they should be sitting back in economy with me. Especially on a red-eye flight.

I don't think it's rude. If you were my friends, I would say "good for you. Go for it." Also, by then, you might be happy to have a break from each other.

Re: a traveling with friends wwyd
We are going to Hawaii. DH and I travel there a lot. These are the flight prices:
coach $553 Economy Plus $695 First $1,009
so it's almost double the cost of coach. Baggage fees are $25 for the first bag and $35 for the second per person. Both guys will have two bags (they are bringing their golf clubs).
Free bags in first.

Re: a traveling with friends wwyd
Book whatever seats you want. The main goal is for YOU to be comfortable regarding the plane. Not like you can sit and talk the whole time, people find that annoying anyway.

There's no way I would expect my friends to sit in coach with me instead of business coming home from Hawaii! NO WAY! Two seats in coach plus bag fees is $1191 if they upgrade to economy plus it would be $1475. It would only be $543 more to be in business for both of them. And if they bought food/drinks on the plane and watched a movie it'd be even less than that!
My husband and I would absolutely be flying in first with you guys.

January is going to be super expensive because it's whale season. We are going April/May. I got great prices. $532 per person going and then the prices above coming home.
I'll FM you

We're doing this exact thing for a destination wedding. I didn't think twice about it hahaha so no I don't think it's rude at all. No explanation needed.
Eta...hawaii, a ten + hour trip, you'd be insane to sit coach if you can sit upfront especially at the price you listed lolol. Don't feel bad, enjoy it.

Re: a traveling with friends wwyd
I couldn't do it. It would ruin the experience for me knowing they were sitting there talking about how we left them for first class, LOL.
However my other idea is to make up a reason why you have to take a "different flight" (different time for whatever reason) then get the upgrade!
