Just curious if those against the circus are also against the zoo and aquariums. Admittedly, I haven't really given this subject much thought but after reading these posts I am wondering if it all goes hand in hand.

That's a good question and I'm trying to figure that out.

I do see a difference - in zoos and aquariums you don't see the animals being injured and/or frightened - but I do have concerned about them.

In zoos I'm not sure some animals have the space they need in their habitats. I also question how they're accounting for climate issues.

I take it on a case by case basis. I refuse to go to Seaworld or White Post Farms.

Yeah, I mean I see why it is wrong. Animals are not here for our entertainment. But at the same time you see a lot of good work that zoos do for endangered species. I guess it's a case by case situation.

The circus is different, IMO, because the animals are forced to perform for the enjoyment of people, often under abusive conditions. And that's their sole purpose for being part of the show. Under no circumstances would I pay money to support that.

I don't love the idea of zoos, the game farm, aquariums, etc. But I have patronized them and probably will again. It's depressing to see how confined and worn down the animals are at some of these places. So it's a rare occasion that we will go to a zoo.

I agree with a lot of this.

The local game farms I can't support. The habitats are run down and it doesn't seem they have the animals interests as a priority.

Holtsville ecology site is one I support bc they are caring for animals that are injured or cannot be released for various reasons.

I've started to question even the nicer zoos and aquariums and I'm really torn on them. We love the Bronx zoo but I no longer do the monorail bc I hate seeing the elephant all alone. Really all of the animals deserve to be in their natural habitat but these zoos do support education and conservation.

There is a great documentary about elephants on Netflix, I have to look up the name. Also, there was a great episode of Inside Man that was about zoos which is available in Netflix.

Eta- The documentary is An Apology to Elephants

The people who are losing their jobs can maybe move to DC and join that circus?

About time they got their act together. It's sad people will lose their jobs and sad because they go back over a century but that doesn't come before their long history of animal abuse. I read they also run the monster trucks and the ice show. Can't they move some employees there? Also, I don't get why they can't just rebrand their image and revamp their show without involving animals. Cirque puts on a great show, no animals... why can't they do something similar? The circus doesn't have to be about the animals. They might see an increased interest in their show if they got creative and modernized.

I am against all too.

I would love to see conservation centers or rehabilitation centers developed so it's educational and a place to visit.

I semi recently found myself at the Central Park zoo (not planned) and one the poor brown and black bear were suicidal and I couldn't even tell if they were breathing. Whatever I read. Asically said they were stolen out of the wild. What effing right do we have to do that?

And aquariums beyond little fish I do not agree with. In sea world I've read interviews of grown men crying after stealing orca babies from their moms. Their moms call for them for days and days.

How anybody still gives Sea World money, especially since the horrors of them stealing babies from their mothers and the abuse and horrible living conditions have been known to the public for well over 20 years, is totally beyond me. People who support Sea World are just an absolute disgrace!
