Ringling Bros Circus to close after 146 years

ELLENTON, Fla. (WFLA) – After 146 years in show business, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey circus is set to close.
It’s the final curtain call for ‘The Greatest Show on Earth.’
This American institution that has entertained Americans since 1871 will come to an end in May.
“Of course we’re sad and it was a very difficult decision to make,” said Feld Entertainment CEO Kenneth Feld.
Over the past ten years, there has been a steep decline in ticket sales. But officials never anticipated the sharp drop in sales after the elephants retired in 2016.
“We’re no longer able to see this as a sustainable business model,” said COO Juliette Feld.
After this season, 400 people will be out of work.

I feel bad for the people who have spent generations in the circus. Unless they can find work with another circus, I wonder what their prospects will be.

So pretty much people were going to see the circus purely for the elephants?
And when they stopped using them in the show, tickets sales took such a nose dive that they had to shut it down?

I'm happy the animals won't be exploited anymore.
It's sad that people will lose their jobs but *shrug* this is the way it goes any time a business goes down. This isn't any more sad than any other business.
I guess they didn't do anything to change the show up after they eliminated the elephants.
ETA: The company that runs the circus is the same that puts on the monster truck shows, the disney on ice, etc. So if their management really cared about their employees they could have put them on those tours instead of firing them.

It's sad. I never got to see the circus as a child, saw it as an adult and I swear I was a child again.
The animals were absolutely amazing.
Big Apple Circus is in bankruptcy, looking for a buyer.

I'm conflicted on this. I am thrilled the animals will no longer be exploited, (I never really remember going to the circus for the animals - it was all about the high wire acts for me!) but I am sad to see a part of my childhood go away and all those people lose their jobs.
I feel like Ringling Brothers was such a part of Americana - it's just a shame to see it go entirely.

I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to hear about this a few days back. I really can't believe that people spent money to see animals that are abused and forced to do things for peoples entertainment. Even the few times I went as a child I hated it, I knew deep down it was wrong I guess, just didn't know why as a little kid. I will never forget the " unicorns" of my day. Circuses disgust me.

I am not sorry to hear this. I've never taken my kids to see the circus and I can't bear to think about the abuse those animals have suffered.
Truthfully, the circus always kind of scared me as a kid so I won't miss it. But I know Ringling Bros Circus is a longstanding institution so I get why some people might feel this is bittersweet.

I almost can't believe that this is happening. It's something that I've dreamed of for the past two decades, and I was very happy to hear it when the news broke the other day.
The animals in circuses are treated horrifically sometimes.
The people who are losing their jobs can maybe move to DC and join that circus?

I am thrilled! I cannot believe that people, including one of my good friends spent money to contribute to the abuse of these animals.
You know what's awesome, shows like cirque de soleil. Maybe make more shows that don't include animals, or better yet shouldn't have horrifically abused them in the first place.

Weren't the animal cruelty charges unsubstantiated? The Humane Society paid the circus $16M to settle the case that they brought up against them.
Also a jury acquitted a Ringling Brother trainer of elephant abuse.

I kind of remember people having issues with sea world. But is it only places that treat animals inhumanely? Or is it a general feeling that places like zoos and aquariums shouldn't exist in general?

None of it should exist IMO - however, I will take my son to high quality zoos and aquariums that support wildlife conservation and establish real life habitats for the animals. But after Harambe was shot I have not taken my son to any zoo and probably won't anymore.

Have you seen Blackfish? If not, watch it. Very eye opening about Sea World's practices.
Tilicum, the whale that has killed several people, and was housed at Sea World forever, just recently died. These orcas live much longer in their natural habitat, where they can freely swim and not be confined to a bathtub. I went to Sea World years ago before I knew better..my son LOVED it, but I would never go again.

That's a good question and I'm trying to figure that out.
I do see a difference - in zoos and aquariums you don't see the animals being injured and/or frightened - but I do have concerned about them.
In zoos I'm not sure some animals have the space they need in their habitats. I also question how they're accounting for climate issues.
I take it on a case by case basis. I refuse to go to Seaworld or White Post Farms.
