Prepping for First Grade

I am proud of how far my son has come this year in Kindergarten and want to make sure that he doesn't "lose it" over the summer. What types of activities/worksheets, etc. do you have planned (if any) for over the summer? We already read every night before bed.

My son is going into first in the fall as well.

I bought him a few workbooks from Five Below. We work on them every few days (more on weekends because I feel like I'm constantly running during the week).

I signed him up for summer reading club at the library so he is reading at least one short book a day and I read to him at bedtime.

His teacher sent home some worksheets to work on as well and I'm going to have him write about his weekends.

Ds is starting 1st in the fall as well.

We got a set of 3 start wars work books at costco.
It's reading, writing, and math.

He loves star wars, so he actually looks forward to doing the books.

the plan is to read every night and do at least a page a day.

we also got flash cards to look through for fun- math and flags of the world. (he picked them and is excited to go through them)

I think it's great that you want to work over the summer with your child. Us teachers call it the "summer slide" when students come back in the fall and have regressed from where they were in June. In my district, it's not unusual to see students drop 2 reading levels so keeping up on reading is so important. Also, writing! It is amazing how much the quality of many students' writing significantly decreases in a couple of short months so be sure to incorporate writing into your summer review. Writing can be done on anything--a review of an experience or a book they've read, a personal narrative on fun summer adventures, a persuasive piece trying to convince you to take him somewhere, etc.

Our K teacher sent home a packet- it has things for them to write, they color "suns" for every book they read, there are questions about the books for them to answer.
DD loves it- she asks to read all the time so she can "color a sun"

Target has some great workbook in the Dollar Spot for math, reading, language, science, etc.... I picked up a few for my son to work on this summer.

I teach 1st grade, and the one thing I told the upcoming parents from Kindergarten was to practice math adding/subtraction facts and number bonds up to 10. So basically all the ways you can make 1, 2, 3, etc up to number 10, and then all the subtraction facts from those numbers.

So as an example, 3 would look like this: 0 +3, 3 + 0, 2+ 1, 1 + 2, 3-0, 3-1, 3-2

This will be a huge, huge help to your child in 1st!

My DS is also going into 1st in the fall. I have him doing the reading club at the library to keep him reading. I found lots of worksheets off Pinterest that I print out.

I get workbooks from costco. We do four pages a day. They also have to read for twenty minutes a day, plus some before bed. We also read to them at night. We just finished reading the BFG which is coming out as a movie. My kids teachers also created a group of papers that they could complete over the summer. I signed them up for the library reading program and there is the barnes and noble reading program too.

We got a packet that is almost a half an inch thick so I am not doing more than that.
