Breast feeding ??

Hello !!!
I had DD 5 days ago
I have been exclusively breast feeding
I want to pump to build a freezer stash and increase my supply but obviously she is still extremely new and her feeding schedule is a little all over the place
So , when did you start to pump ??
And if you exclusively breast fed when did you pump - after feeding / middle of the night .... ????
I don't want it to affect DD's feeding schedule at all
TIA

Breast feeding ??

I started pumping about a few weeks in. Dh would help with feedings by taking a bottle feeding. I would nurse and pump after I nursed. Increased my supply that way too.

Re: Breast feeding ??

I don't remember when I started pumping but the nurse in-hospital suggested I'm 15 minutes after she finished eating. That suggestion seemed to work out well for me. I always wanted to make sure I wasn't in the middle of pumping when she needed to eat again.

Re: Breast feeding ??

The lactation consultant I took the class with suggested pumping at 2 weeks. I started closer to 3. She said to pump 30-40 min after a feeding. DS is almost 4 weeks and the first 2 were brutal. Cluster feeding like crazy. I didn't think I'd make it. There was definitely no time to pump and you want them to regulate your supply based on what they need at first too. Lately I've been pumping when DH is giving him a bottle. I'm only really doing 1 bottle a day though. One side is a great producer and the other is pathetic. I'm not trying to freeze anything yet though. I'm just going day by day here for now.

Same- dd is just under 5 weeks and it's near impossible to get ahead of her feeding schedule to pump anything to freeze and save. Same thing with the sides- one side can pump like 3 oz. at a time and the other is lucky to get 1.5 oz.

Also, this past weekend I pumped ahead of time and tried to freeze and save it so I could have a few drinks this weekend and not worry about feeding the baby. I guess this lead to an oversupply because she had two neon green poops which, according to Google, is indication of baby getting too much foremilk and not enough of the nutrient rich hindmilk. I also had a clogged duct from getting engorged and dd not being able to drain my boob. Ive cut back on the pumping and everything seems to be going back to normal, but damn it's hard!

I would wait about 2 to 3 weeks to start pumping because that's usually when your supply starts to regulate. I would pump about 30 minutes after dd's morning feed. Once dd got older and started sleeping longer I would pump before bed so I wouldn't get engorged in the middle of the night.

It does take some trial and error to find the right time to pump in between feedings. Hang in there, it does get easier!!!!

Re: Breast feeding ??

Thank you for all the information
Dd1 never latched so I pumped pretty much from day 1
Dd2 I just don't remember - lol
I guess for dd3 I'll just keep doing what I'm doing - feeding on demand and see what happens in a few more weeks
Thank you !!!

Re: Breast feeding ??

I wouldn't pump for at least the first 4, 5 weeks unless I'd really need to (let's say for work). U're supply is still trying to balance itself out based on the needs of ur baby, if u keep adding pumping sessions u might end up over producing and that's not fun. Once ur supply has been established, then u can def pump. I don't really pump but I've read the best time to pump is after midnight since this is the time where ur body produces the richest bm and the most quantity in a 24 hr period, if u don't feel like waking up in the middle of the night (who would!), u can pump as soon as u wake up.
