If you look at the 2015 test scores in districts all over LI, many were 60-90% proficient or better ( stronger districts). While others were 20-30% proficient (lower rated districts). How does one explain that? Did Three Village get a different test than Sachem that was more age appropriate?
But that is not taking into how many opted out. So the results are really skewed and should be taken with a grain of salt when researching schools anyway. They also don't take into account how many special education students are taking the tests (and likely doing poorly).
ETA...in relation to the special ed numbers....my son was going into 3rd grade in our previous district. The school he was already attending, and his home school, sent ALL of the 3rd grade special education students to another school in the district. Reason being? So the schools test score averages weren't brought down by their scores. Principal flat out told me that. I was floored. So ship these kids out for a year, then bring them back the following year. No way....we moved after that!

Interesting we're only at 36%. My DS isn't at the age yet, but from what I've seen on FB and local moms groups,, I would have thought opt out would have been a lot higher. I guess those that opt out are just a lot more vocal.

Would be nice to see how the % correlates to demographics/socio economic factors.

If I were looking to move, I wouldn't look at school ranking. I would look at opt out percentages.

We've been toying with the idea of possibly moving to the CSH district and I'm really turned off by the way their school/superintendent has encouraged families & students to take these assessments.

My district is 12% which is actually a little higher than I thought it would be. Hardly anyone here opts out and I don't think that's going to change any time soon.

I agree. I think you can tell a lot about the future of a district based upon how the super handled the assessments...I'm unimpressed with how mine did...I think he is a great businessman, but I'm not feeling he is for the kids, which is a big part of the whole picture! Mike Hynes is such an amazing super...I love what he is doing for his district!

Agreed. IF we were looking to move Id be in Comsewogue so fast, I wouldn't even consider another district

I disagree with this if what you are implying is that a superintendent is not good and the district will suffer if they did not encourage people to opt out. I don't think that the actual assessments are important as long as the teachers aren't spending valuable time preparing for the test instead of teaching the curriculum. In my district these tests are almost a non issue and almost no one opts out, and I can assure you we have a very well liked superintendent and the general consensus is that he's doing a fantastic job. We are also one of the top rated districts FWIW.

Edited because honestly, I don't have the desire to get into a back and forth about testing...FWIW, if people have completely different viewpoints on testing, they won't agree on what makes a great superintendent and district, and that is what makes it great that we can choose where we live and what school district our children can go to.

I am a teacher and I have seen how these tests are developmentally inappropriate. I believe that a parent has a right to choose. There are many issues with these test. The first is how they are no developmentally appropriate, at least not the ELA. The math is actually ok. The second is the fact that they were and will be tied to teacher evaluations. This is wrong on a couples levels. For one the teacher will be teaching toward the test. You have to show progress. Even though the test from the year before is different. An example is that the 5th grade reading passages and questions were more fair last year than this. So how can you tie teachers careers on something that is not the same? Another thing is if a kid is a 3.86 and goes down to a 3.32. They are still on grade level but this loss affects teachers. Another reason is the test are just too long. If they cubit down considerably. Finally a test is flawed if you had 70% of the state passing in 2008 and now only 31%. You have to questions these things. No support the opt out movement because only parent will cause changes in education. They do not listen to teAchers. On the other hand, people need to respect parents choices to allow their kid to test. I have heard of kids being made fun of and saying they do not care about their teachers. Also parents have to realize that some testing is helpful to teachers.
