How would you respond?

I am childfree and my four year old nephew said happy mother's day to me on the phone and I didn't know what to say. His mom was right next to him and didn't say anything either. It's bad enough to hear it hear it from a grocery store clerk to the guy at the gym when they assume I am a mom but I was surprised to hear from a four year old.

I think at 4 years old, a child thinks any adult female is a mother. I wouldn't worry about it, nor think to correct the child. All that will do is cause more confusion, when in reality the kid doesn't or shouldn't care.

I would say thank you. He is 4. People are being nice and saying happy mothers day. I take it like Christmas. I am Jewish. I just say thank you.

I would just say Thank you. It could be that he can't differentiate, or it could be that it is just something you say on a holiday., like Happy Easter.

My Godmother said it to me, which I thought was odd- she is also childless & knows full well that I am -- I guess it was just habit.

Re: How would you respond?

Thank you.

He's 4, doesn't quite understand it.
My niece and nephew never acknowledged me on Mother's Day, and it kind of hurt since I was very much involved in their lives when they were younger.
My mom is gone 11 years already.

I can't deal with strangers wishing me a happy mother's day, so I hibernate at home. DH finally gets it.

At 38 years old I still wish my aunt a happy mother's day (her son passed away years ago)--- same reason they have Mother Day cards for aunts etc - I just use it to mean thank you for playing a "maternal" role in my life.
