ID Theft
We rec'd a call from our bank that charges were made from our debit card. We live in Texas and the charges were from Hempstead, NY at Homedepot for $275 and charges at PAYLESS for $13 dollars. We both have our debit cards so they were not stolen. The rep mentioned that it was a counterfeit card with counterfeit strip linked to our bank. Arghhh! I used to work and I used to go to the chase bank there in Hempstead. I wonder how they got access to our acct.
We placed an alert with the credit bureaus and we are ordering our reports. Our bank mentioned that we are not liable for these charges. It pi$$es me off!!!!!

That is horrible!!! Was she liable for it?
It hasn't even posted on our acct. yet. So I dont know if this scam is set up where it is never posted on the acct. I am going to check again tomorrow. I cannot help but wonder if it is an inside job at Chase or Homedepot.
We have two accounts with two different banks. This one is more of a daily spending acct. The other account we have more money in that one. It had always been a joke that had someone stolen our ID.....they would be upset.

She had to get all sorts of letters and go to the police and the bank had different *investigations* and finally deposited the money back into her account but it was a lot of leg work on HER part!! And this is a bank where their commercials state something about protecting you from identity theft and putting your money back in 24 hours or something - TOTAL BS!!!!
So my advice would be to stay all over the bank!!!! Good luck! Sorry this has happened to you!!

Re: ID Theft
I can't believe that- I'm sorry you have to go through this. How does this happen? I feel like no matter how careful you try to be, there's always a chance of something like this happening and it really s*cks.
I hope that you are able to get the money back without too much trouble.

I wish we knew! It could be a shady employeeing dealing with charge cards everyday and writing down the debit card number. Or it could be someone inside the bank and selling debit card numbers to others. I am sure at Chase it is easy. They have so many temps working there!

Re: ID Theft
I'm so sorrry that you are a victim, but thankfully the bank caught it!
It's such a shame that we cannot trust anyone anymore and can't relax about our own identity!
