That all makes sense if that is how you the BF mother feels more comfortable- (except for the restroom thing-you dont eat in the bathroom-then why should your baby?) but is this what you expect all BFing moms to do??? ( im not being snotty- Im just curious if you are stating your views as if you were the mother- and on how you feel more cozy- or if this is what you expect of all BFing moms)

I meant a bathroom with a nursing area (but I know I didn't type that before)

For myself- yes, I would absolutely BF in private (assuming that one day I have a child and even decide to BF)

As for others, well, that's harder to answer. Do I think that 100% of the time, each and EVERY woman BF in private? I guess not because that just might not be possible- especially if there's some sort of emergency situation.

But, I also don't think that bare-breasted public BFing should be a common, accepted thing either.

I understand a little better now...and agree- if YOU the mother feels more confortable in private (which- was exactly how I was while BFIng) than thats exactlt what you should do...

I just dont feel mothers- should feel pushed into a car- just because "society" cant accept a mother nursing...

I also agree- there is a discreet way of going about it as well!

in sue's defense, she wasn't stating that's what ALL BF mom's should do - just what SHE would do if she were to BF her child when the time came...at least that's how i took it.

Well- I wasnt sure--- that is why I asked her!Chat Icon

IMO there is nothing gross about breastfeeding. It is the most beautiful, natural thing that a mother can share with their child and their is no reason any woman should feel ashamed or be made to feel like she has to hide to feed her child.

a very good point!

I guess this is where I have the problem. First most women do try to be discreet. I don't know many moms who just flail around a bare breast. Sure maybe a little will show when trying to get the baby latched on but its usually for a very short time.
At the same time I don't think a woman should have to throw a blanket over her baby to nurse. That's ridiculous. How would you like to eat with a blanket over over your head, getting all hot and sweat.
Again I come back to you if you don't like it then don't look because no BFing mom really wants you watching her anyway
(by you and don't mean you I mean the population who think we need to cover up in general)

Re: Spinoff to Would you be offended..

The problem is that as a society in the US, the breast is viewed as a sexual object. So people take offense when they see one on a cover of a magazine. However, anyone who has nursed would probably agree with me when I say that the breast is a lot more than a sexual object. It is a source of food and nutrients for a baby. If people stopped viewing it as such a sexual object they might not get so offended when they see a mother nursing their child on a magazine. I mean for someone to write in and say they didn't want their 13 year old child to see it, do you really think your 13 year old son has not looked at playboy at all?

I was not comfortable breastfeeding in public, but that was my own personal choice. Just like I wouldn't feel comfortable going to a nudist beach. It has nothing to do with society for me, it's my own comfort level of my body. That being said, I have no problems with a woman nursing a child in public provided it is discreet. If a woman is at a mall and she goes and sits on a bench somewhere I think that is fine. I think at a food establishment is very questionable, but if it's done in a manner that you could't even really tell that she was breastfeeding, then I think it's fine.

I just wanted to mention a few things that anyone who has never breastfed a baby might not know about.

So lets say you are walking through the mall with your little baby and the baby gets hungry. Physiologically what happens to you is you get quite an intense burning tingling sensation in your breasts and then let down begins. Your milk literally begins to flow out of your breasts, if you were topless, the milk would litersally spray out of you at that time. The pain is like nothing you have ever felt before in the most sensitive part of your body. If you don't feed that baby NOW that baby will SCREAM. A baby doesn't care whether or not you can get to a private area, that baby needs to EAT. and that baby needs to EAT NOW. It is not negotiable. Also, hearing someone elses baby or simply thinking about your own baby triggers this quite painful sensation.

I want to finish writing more, but my baby is screaming to be fed, so I should go.

WOW - so women can be HALF NAKED on the cover of Maxim magazine and the like, but a pic of a mother breastfeeding her child on the cover is "gross"???? Chat Icon Chat Icon

I couldn't agree more!!!!!

Besides the fact that right now we are country at war, we live in a constant fear of a terrorist attack, yet this is something people decide to take issue withChat Icon You can't see nipple in that picture. When I first looked at it I thought it was a picture of a child kissing his mother's pregnant stomach. As woman we really need to back each other up, instead of tear each other down. I mean can we really expect a woman to ever run this country if we as woman can't band together over something so simple and natural as breast feedingChat Icon

When I've seen women BF in public, they usually had a blanket over the child. Out of curiosity, how do you BF in public without a blanket but still not really expose yourself?

Re: Spinoff to Would you be offended..

While I only had the chance to pump but not breastfeed - it way my choice to cover myself while others were in my hospital room. In the NICU pumping room - there are curtains where all the mothers can pump and be blocked by outsiders.
I have never once been bothered by a woman BF and have sat and chatted with many friends and family members while they fed their children.

A partially exposed breast on the cover of a magazine can get people riled up? Ummm hello, it is not PORN - it is a child getting food. Why must this be an issue?
If the woman does not want her child seeing the magazine, why doesn't she hide it with the rest of the porn I'm sure is somewhere in the house.

Re: Spinoff to Would you be offended..

IMO

and i think a bunch of people do not realize, meaning the general public, that BF IS NOT about whipping the boob out to feed your child...

I was at an event a little over a year ago and there was a mother BF...I NEVER EVEN KNEW IT...
Looked at her, talked with her....DIDN"T KNOW IT.

And no i am not blind...

Just didn't realzie that BF wasn't a woman pulling up or down her **** to feed her child..
It is actually a very discreet...t the point that one wouldn't even realize unless they were staring at them...

So over the years my viewhas changed quite a lot

BUT...i do not believe in anything different than i described
I DO NOT believe in wihpping the girls our in public to feed the baby...
i won't believe in that NOW nor do i need to be a mother to "miraculously" think differently
