What represents the area in your opinion?

What would you miss if you left?
What screams HOME when you see it?

I grew up in Whitestone but live in Bayside now....

Is it bad that when I think of either place I think of the shopping centers and stores? For Whitestone I picture the shopping center and the village...
And for Bayside Bay Terrace and the stores on Union Turnpike near where I live now.

I moved to Whitestone in 1996 and left in 2005. I still miss lots of things, namely:

-being able to walk to Key Food and the shops on 150th, and the nail salons. (I lived in the building on the corner across from Shenanigans)
-the library- I loved that library.
-great Chinese and Italian food- and the video store which is now long gone.
-Francis Lewis Park

ETA- The Barnes and Noble in Bay Terrace!

Re: Bayside/Whitestone people-Q for you

Born and raised in Whitestone, all my friends from college and those not from Whitestone say I am obsessed
Chat Icon I love everything about it.

I love that it is suburban/urban. I like that I can walk to everything, get to NYC easily, get to LI easily. I like that I can park easily.

I love the hometown feel, we are in one of the busiest cities in the world but when you are in Whitestone it is homey, people know one and other, generations of people live here--it isn't transient.

eta: I work in Bayside and if I had to move from Whitestone it would be to Bayside or North Flushing Chat Icon

I keep thinking of things to add lol--I also love that we live so close to the airports, my whole life growing up I thought what a pain in the ass it must be to get home from somewhere and have a long trip ahead of you getting home...

Re: Bayside/Whitestone people-Q for you

I love that it is close to the city and close to the Island.
Restaurants are close by.
Bell Blvd and Sullivan's outdoors when the weather is nice.
Pizza Chef.
I can walk places instead of driving.
Fort Totten and the park along the Cross Island.
Hate the Cross Island, take the Clearview instead.
I live in Bay Terrace Gardens - it doesn't feel like city living, more like a small town.
The express bus stops on the corner or a 7 minute bus ride gets me to the LIRR Port Washington Line.

I grew up in Astoria, loved it there but it started to change for bad. Now it has changed once again for better.
I have been in Bayside for 16 years and plan on staying for another 12 until I retire.

Walking to stores
Right near the city but not quite in the city
Right near LI but not quite in LI
The people - hard to explain. I left Whitestone/Bayside for 17 months recently and learned the hard way what being "real" is. Basically no one trying to be someone they are not
Easy commute for DH
The restaurants

Re: Bayside/Whitestone people-Q for you

I grew up in No. Flushing (few blocks from Bayside) & then Whitestone.

I still miss it; the more spread out houses (than other parts of Queens)
Graziella Pizza place
D'Aquila Bakery
OLBS (my old school)
How friendly everyone was & many people tend to stay in the same area
Loved the neighborhood playgrounds
Walking to all the stores
So many good restaurants
Being close to the water
Loved the path on side of Cross Island & Ft. Totten (I'd bring my dog down there often)

I grew up there and still visit there at least 3 times a week to see friends/family.

I miss the memories of my childhood there. Other than that, I can't say there is a "place" that I miss most about it. If I miss it, I just go back and visit.
i.e. pizza chef
nail salons open until midnight
Little Bay Park

At this point in my life, the cost of living there does not justify anything that I would get back in return and find elsewhere.
With the exception of being close to my family and childhood friends, there's not much else that I would miss.

I have to say that it is an amazing neighborhood and as a PP said, it's close enough to NYC but still very suburban-like.

I had a great experience there but looking for something different now.

I grew up nearby too and I miss Cherry Valley. Go to spot in my teen days Chat Icon

But what I miss the most is Fort Totten and the trail along the Cross Island. Always loved bike riding and walking those paths.

I also grew up there and moved. I miss it so much... the food, different restaurants, bell boulevard, bay terrace, I also loved Cherry Valley, loved being in close proximity to the city and Long Island, easy access to bridges, also the port Washington line. I went to school in the city and never realized (until moving out to Long Island) what an easy commute that was.

I also love the fact that my friends and I grew up walking everywhere, or taking busses, or trains. I didn't get my license until I was 20. I didn't need it. I would love it if my kids could do the same thing.

Born and raised whitestone. Moved at 24 but my parents still lived there so I was still there all the time, my parents only sold there house 2 or 3 years ago.

I don't really miss it that much... it was changing, I don't think it was the same as it was when I grew up by then. But if unchanged what I miss:

the Village
Storks (which now closed)
the bread store
park by the whitestone bridge
the path along the cross island
convenience to LGA
convenience to everything in bayside (bay terrace, bell blvd)

The original owners sold the bakery and the quality went downhill. It eventually closed.
Same thing happened with Cake Box in Bay Terrace.

Really!? wow

I agree w/ pp... there were so many things I loved about living in that part of queens, and I do miss some of them, but the neighborhood definitely has changed as everything does!

I grew up in Bayside and Flushing and live in Whitestone now and I LOVE it.

I would miss proximity to EVERYTHING- Manhattan, LI, beaches, airports, Citifield, yankees stadium right over the bridge etc. I just think it is so centrally located which is perfect. Good choices for supermarkets, bakeries, drugstores, nail salons, schools etc. And i like being right by the highway bc it makes it so easy to get to -not only for us but for visitors.

I lived in Manhattan for a few years and coming back to Queens was a huge adjustment but i love Whitestone and I don't see us leaving here for a long time. I know neighborhoods change but i think Whitestone is one that is still really good -and property values are still high :)

For me it is the generations of families that have been here for a long time. Both DH & I grew up here and now are raising our kids here as well.

Now that I am a mom, I love having my DS attend school where I attended and be in the same class with the children of my old school mates. His teacher is one of my first grade school friends.

I love the proximity to highways, bridges and airports. Varsi's and Tony's deli's have great Italian products. I love that I can walk into Harpell's Chemist and they know who I am.

I just love the history of Whitestone - Francis Lewis is a signer on the Declaration of Independence, Rudolph Valentino's summer home is located in Whitestone as is Mary Pickford's. Charlie Chaplin was a resident as well. I love the historic landmark homes in the area, the small town feel but yet 20 minutes outside of the city.

The one downside is the price of homes...a half a million does not get you that much here. As the OP knows Chat Icon we are currently selling our co-op and are hoping to buy a bigger one in the area, since private home prices are just so far out of our comfort zone. In the same breath I also see the plus of them begin so high.

Agreed....I lived in a variety of areas of queens in my life and the bayside/Whitestone areas have not really changed in my mind if anything the area closer to college point has changed a bit but college point has always been very warehouse-y so it was inevitable
