Did anyone hear about james franco and the 17 year old on Instagram? Why didn't she go through with it? SO weird.

(Newser) – A story that is either kind of hilarious or totally gross is making the rounds: It seems James Franco met a 17-year-old tourist in New York City on Tuesday as he was signing autographs after performing in Of Mice and Men, and later attempted—via Instagram—to hook up with her. The teen posted photos and a video—in which Franco can be seen and heard asking her to tag him—on Instagram. Then things got weird. In screenshots the teen posted to Imgur (they've since been taken down), Franco, 35, appears to try and pick up on the girl. The screenshots were captured for posterity by Daily Dot, Dlisted, Gawker, Jezebel, and other outlets.
In them, Franco (or at least it appears to be Franco) asks the girl (first through Instagram direct messages, then in text messages) how old she is, whether she has a boyfriend, and whether he should rent a room so they can get together in her hotel. The girl twice asked for proof of his identity, and he sent two selfies, one in which he's holding up a piece of paper with her first name written on it. He also asks her at one point not to tell anyone about the interaction, but to text when she wants to meet up. In response to the drama swirling around the story, Franco tweeted, "I HOPE PARENTS KEEP THEIR TEENS AWAY FROM ME. Thank you." He also briefly added a line to his Instagram profile reading, "PLEASE DON'T DM IF YOU ARE UNDER 18, THANK YOU," but that has since been removed.

If you are, so am I.
17 may be the age of consent, but IMO, this falls under, just because you can doesn't mean you should.
And for him to say "don't tell", makes me think he even realized how creepy this was.

But I also feel, from reading her texts, etc to him- that she was leading him on.
Oh I don't have a boyfriend if YOU'RE around.
I will meet you if you send me a pic of you holding up a paper with my name on it, etc
She also gave him her cell # since there was texting.
I don't know- he may not have been right but she also didn't' just shut him right down either.
Then she goes and posts it all over the internet.

He apparently discussed it on Live this morning:
James Franco appeared on “Live! With Kelly and Michael” on Friday and admitted to flirting with a 17-year-old girl, saying he was “embarrassed” by the incident.
The 35-year-old actor addressed the leaked Instagram and text messages that were posted online on Wednesday by the girl and screengrabbed by various news outlets even though she deleted them.
"I didn't want to come on the show and...feel awkward, so uh, yeah. I mean I guess, you know, I'm embarrassed, and I guess I'm just a model of, you know, how social media is tricky," he said, according to E! News. "It's a way people meet each other today. But what I've learned I guess just because I'm new to it is like, you don't know who's on the other end. You meet somebody in person and you get a feel for them but you don't know who you're talking to, and, you know? So I used bad judgment. I learned my lesson."
The messages showed Franco trying to arrange a meet up with the girl at a hotel in New York City even after she told him she was not yet 18 years old. He sent her several pictures of himself to prove he was the one she was speaking with.
"Unfortunately in my position, I mean...I have a very good life, but not only do I have to go through the embarrassing kind of rituals of kind of meeting someone, sometimes if I do that then it gets, you know, published for the world so now, you know, it's like doubly embarrassing," Franco said.
The age of consent is 17 in New York, but while Franco did nothing illegal, some fans were still creeped out by his actions.
He initially addressed the scandal on Wednesday tweeting, “I HOPE PARENTS KEEP THEIR TEENS AWAY FROM ME. Thank you.”
Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan praised the star for addressing responding to his critics and addressing the scandal head on.
“I always think honesty and not avoiding anything is always the best policy and I appreciate that,” Strahan said.
