I think it is practical.

I see posts here all the time with people complaining about "your presence is present enougth" and how they still feel obligated to bring a gift.
Then people complain when they don't give gift receipts. And others thing it is nervy to ask for a gift receipt.
Gift registries are selfish and don't teach our children how to deal with disappointment.
You ask what you can get for a gift and don't like the answer, so you get something else.

Last year when I had my son's birthday, I did not want anyone to bring gifts. He has more than enough and Christmas was a few months away. We had a house full of gifts from his party. There are still gifts (half a walk in closet worth) from his birthday and Christmas that he has no opened yet. I have even considered not having a party for him this year because I really want no gifts for him. But I do still want to celebrate his birthday. What is the compromise?

I don't understand all the hoopla surrounding gifts. She did not ask for cash, she asked for Kohl's giftcard. Which in my opinion is quite practical and easy for anyone to get. And let's face it a $10 giftcard from Kohl's can go a long way with their sales. Plus it's easy because you can get them almost anywhere.

Extremely tacky, IMO. There is nothing wrong with giving specific ideas IF ASKED but to blatantly request certain types of gifts?? Soooo freakin ballsy and tacky.

This is an invite I got a few weeks ago:

Our husbands work together and this was sent out to all the employees at this particular location Chat Icon Keep in mind that the mother of this child has just moved here and has met probably 10 out of the 100 people who work here. People have NO shame anymore!

Beyond tacky! Some people really have nerve. Asking for gift cards is the same as asking for cash. A birthday party is not a fundraiser.

ETA: If you are fortunate enough to have too many toys to count, why don't you just donate the toys to charity or give them to other kids you know.

Ha! Rude rude rude. You don't TELL people what to buy you. Now, if someone ASKS that's different. I always keep a wish list and if someone specifically asks I tell them they can check out his wish list but don't feel obligated to buy from it. My mom, ils, etc. love the list. I keep it more for myself- ideas etc.

I disagree...........asking for a gift card is the same as asking for cash. It is SO tacky.

However, I admit, I do use Wish Lists. But I have a A LOT of family who buy for my kids and who inevitably will ask, what do they want, what do they need, what do they like, etc etc. The Wish List just makes things easier BUT I'm okay with people buying outside the Wish List. It's not a rule, it's a suggestion.

To just blatantly request no toys and ask for ONLY cash/gift cards to me is rude. It makes you feel like you have NO choice and if you do bring something other than a Kohls gift card it will be completely unappreciated.

People astonish me, including that in the invite as a SEPARATE piece of paper especially takes some balls.

ETA - As an aside, I'm not even a fan of giving gift cards. First, I find them impersonal. Second, I don't always want the person to know what I spent. I'm good at getting nice gifts at a good price and I like to shop and find the perfect gift. I'd also be worried that if I gave a gift card would the receipent think I'm cheap for not "giving enough".

wow to the Op's invitation and the one with the planes invite!

It is one thing to tell people when they ask - but so nervy to ask beforehand!

And why specifically a Kohl's giftcard?!?!

I would give a check! HAHAHA

Part of me is like "great..easy gift idea" instead of guessing & shopping for one ..i guess it depends on how you take it. I can see where she is coming from but approach was a lil slighted

I think she worded it so that it sounds like a request rather than a preference. And that is what is rude about it. Like you have to give a GC and not have a choice about it. How old are these kids? Can they even actually shop for themselves yet? I'd now give clothes and pick them myself. Purposefully not from Kohls.

Re: This was written on bday invite my son received..

Yeah, she may just go buy herself a throw rug or other items for herself. That's why I find the Kohls request over the top. If it were CHildren's Place for ex, then it would still be tacky but wouldn't make me think other than it's tacky.

I think this calls for a special gift….like a drum set.
And in this case……2 drum sets.

Without gift receipts and with no identification of where they were bought so they cannot be returned.

I can't believe that. It's actually unbelievable. And rude. I would actually consider declining the invite because this kind of shit pisses me off!!!

"Santa spoiled the girls so much this year that we would appreciate not receiving any toys, however, we are excited to let them pick out a new spring wardrobe, so please make your gift a Kohls giftcard. Thank you!!".

Thoughts?

If they're so excited to let the girls pick a new spring wardrobe, perhaps they should pay for it themselves

...and let Santa know that he should leave gift cards instead of gifts next year.

Re: This was written on bday invite my son received..

I find this terribly tacky (and the subsequent invitation posted was awful as well). I received an invitation to a coworker's daughter's first birthday party indicating her clothing size, shoe size, the url for her wish list, and a request for gift receipts! I couldn't believe it!

I come from a family where my registry information wasn't even put in my bridal shower invitations because my mom thinks that is inappropriate (I don't agree in the case of showers). She gave out the registry info when people replied and specifically asked for it.

I made a wish list for my daughter for Chanukah and her first birthday, but only gave it out if someone specifically asked me if she had a wish list. My DH's family likes buying from one, so that's why I do it. I would NEVER EVER list it in an invitation.

How about this....
Santa spoiled the girls so much this year so in lieu of presents, we'd love if you'd make a donation to charity XYZ.

I guess not though.

That's what I was expecting it to say.

Not a fan at all. I think it's rude and just bizarre to me. Even to ask for clothes would be one thing but to specify only gift cards to a specific store? Even weirder. We don't want your toys and we don't trust your judgement on clothing choices either. Why not just ask for cash?Chat Icon

I think it is obnoxious, but this is so funny because literally this morning I was thinking I wish I could put that on DD2's invites. Actually, I wish I could say just give her money or gift cards because she has more toys than she could ever need and all of DD1's hand me downs!!! I of course would never, but I hate for people to spend their money on toys and clothes that we really don't need or want.

Edited bc I read too fast and thought she was asking for clothes. Beyond tacky to ask for "Kohls gift cards." I personally would go to Toys R Us and buy the biggest toy possible if I got that invite.
