HIMYM 3/3/14 (spoilers!)
Ok, so what are the theories as to why Ted cried at the end??
I'm going with the mother is dying and she won't make it to her daughter's funeral, which is why Ted is telling the kids these stories, but then again, that seems too obvious.

Came on to say the same thing. The mother is ill and won't be able to make it to their daughter's wedding. They both got upset and she quickly dismissed it. She also foreshadowed it when she spoke about just enjoying each other's company instead of dwelling on whether or not they'll all be together again
I never really thought they were going to have her be dead but now it totally seems to be going in that direction.
Kind of a let down. Seems like they thought it would be this big shocker but it's just like "really? after all that?"

Terrible. Also foreshadowed when she said she was worried he'd live in his stories. They need to change direction, or the re-runs will be ruined for all of us.

They never show any flash-forwards with her older - granted they've only done a few with her... But they had other flash-forwards with Ted as an older man and I think he makes a phone call to Marshall, not to the wife (when he runs into Wendy the waitress at an airport) and we've seen old Lily and Marshall together...
This totally bums me out. They also mentioned a "surprise ending" with Robin's mom showing up around the same time they made these references to the mother not being there... Like this is the show's surprise ending.
UGH I get that the show was getting boring and I wanted stuff to happen but this is so depressing!!

I just logged in just to see what everyone had to say about this! I definitely agree, I think the mother is sick and going to die. I really hope we're wrong bc that will be such a sad ending!!

I think this is where the story line is going, and agree. I can't believe they are gonna lead it all up to that.

I signed on just to see everyones guess too!
I feel like her dying or already having passed makes sense, even though it's terribly sad. Why else would Ted sit these kids down to tell them this story in the first place?

DH and I thought the same thing...now I'm bummed. Used to be such a fun show and now so depressing...I'm sad to see it end this way

I didn't think about this till I came on here to read what others though. Such a sad ending then!
DH and I are just excited we only have to sit through 4 more episodes. Just putting in our time to finish this off since we've watched it from the beginning.

There is a buzzfeed thing about this. It made me cry.....poor Ted, he only gets to be happy for such a short period of time.
I'm kind of annoyed I invested so much in what may be the saddest show ever.
