Geez! how do you guys even BUDGET for something that expensive? Holy cramolies! $500 a month for heat?

Even if it were averaged out to $2400 a year or $200 a month that isn't electric that's just heat? Chat Icon

Beginning to wonder why I ever wanted to buy a house out in NY and feeling very grateful I couldn't afford the mortgage. That is ASTOUNDING!

So what is the average monthly utilities water, light and gas/oil?

I feel very guilty for complaining about the house always being so cold and that I had to wear layers and layers under blankets to get comfy. I never paid for oil. Though once my landlord said they had to up the rent because it was a cold winter the year before, I didn't bat an eye and just paid up.

Seriously feel for you guys. My brain would pop from stress.

Yes, just oil. Electric bill is another $140, which I know is pretty cheap.

Water is cheap in NY. I pay about $40 for 3 months.

Anyone else using a tons of oil this winter?

No more than usual. We usually just use about 350 gal for the year and we've had 2 fill ups of around 50 gals each since December.

I am the heat Nazi in my house. 66 all the time while we are out and sleeping. 68 if we are home and I am feeling generous.

My last oil delivery was $1100. And my power balanced billing went up to $500 a month.

UGH!!!

I pay about 43 per month for water in NJ and an additional 72 for sewer fees too.

Yes it's crazy! We have a $ 600 bill waiting to be paid and they are due to come fill up again Chat Icon killing my budget, we can't convert to gas Bc there are no lines here. My neighbor has some kind of pellet stove and the smell churns my stomach when they use it. Do they all smell like that?

That might be wood burning.
My pellets don't smell at all and I'm very very sensitive to smells like that.
I can't even be outside when people are burning bonfires or fire pits because it gives me a massive headache.

DD spends a lot of time with her friend who has a pellet stove, and she is really sensitive to smells. She's never complained. I've been in that house too and haven't smelled it either, though I have a bad sense of smell.

Pellet stoves don't smell. Wood burning ones do depending on what wood you burn

Anyone else using a tons of oil this winter?

Yeah we get it in the electric ... My light goes up in the summer (Central AC and Texas Summers) but its not that horrible. My highest to date was $190 for my 1600 sq ft house. But I have a front room that will NOT cool off (I need to fix that somehow). Our average Electric hovers around $100, but lately its been up due to the cold. Colder it gets the more heat we run but still only up to like $200 tops I would guess.

Water is stupid. I still can't figure it out. We run our washing machine and washer. AJ takes baths with gallons of water. I do not water my grass (LOL) and we have three adults taking showers. Still its about $30 a month. The LOWEST bill you can have is $25 because of the fees and since sewage is included. I think I once got up to $40 but I had 7 ppl living in my house for a month.

We don't have oil or gas bills. My aunt does as she has gas heat. I guess I should ask how much she pays.

ah but we get it in Taxes that's about 27% of the taxable value of our home. Which is why I have a small home LOL!

I heat my home with a pellet stove and I use so little oil that we have been dropped by a few oil companies.
I use about a tank of oil the entire season, if that.
We really only use oil for hot water.
It was seriously the best decision/investment we ever made.
I highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you have a ranch or a smaller home.

We did this in the fall for our 3 level splanch, 2300 sq ft. It was the best decision we made. We've had one oil delivery since may & only bc we were at 1/2 tank due to the hot water. The pellet stove is on our ground floor but the heat rises. We've bought approximately $1200 worth of pellets or 5 tons which will last us until we shut it down. Best investment

We have a wood burning stove and it does not smell. Once you put the wood in and shut the door, I am not sure how much of the smell would be able to get out since it is a sealed system. I highly recommend looking into getting one or getting a pellet stove. It was definitely one of the best investments we ever made. We have very high vaulted ceilings and no matter how high we kept the heat, it was never warm. The wood stove keeps the house nice and toasty and our heat rarely turns on when we are using it.

I am having to heat my Mom's home until it sells - it's in contract . I started out with a full tank of 660 gallons and have had to put in $1000 twice since then. Not Happy :(

We also use pellets and it has no odor at all.

Anyone else using a tons of oil this winter?

We are spending a fortune on oil this winter. I already used all of the oil that was estimated to last until April.

How big is everyone's homes?

Mine is small. One floor.
It's like 1400 sq feet approx
I can get away with a ton of pellets in average winters ($350) and a ton in a half in bad winters like this
We get one oil delivery a season- just for hot water.

Mines about 1100 square feet

We filled up in September then got another 75 gallons in January. The wood stove has been amazing. I'd like to get sola tubes next year to utilize the suns natural rays to warm the other rooms in the home...

We have a wood burning stove and got it installed last year. It was worth the investment. We keep the house at 60 and the wood burning stove keeps it at 74 most days.

We love it.

I have to show this to DH! You think you're bad? He has been keeping ours on 62-63, if I "crank" it to 64 he gets mad lol.

Last year when we had a newborn I twisted his arm and got him to raise it to 68. Chat Icon Chat Icon
