2.5 week NB spitting up through her nose

DD has been an amazing baby, eats, sleeps, poops.

Over the past couple if days she has started to become gassy after her feedings. She is on Alimentum. DS was colic when he was born, so I didn't want to experience the formula hell we went through with him with DD.

She has now started spitting up through her nose a few times. Last night was the worse where we ended up calling 911 because she could not catch her breath, her back was arched and she was foaming out of her mouth.

Could this be the start if silent reflux? She does not spit up otherwise, we were burping every 2 ounces because she seemed comfortable with that. I notice that she makes these sour faces when she is sleeping after she is fed and will cry for a few seconds during those faces.

Anyone have experience with spitting up through the nose? Someone said I should burp at every 1/2 ounce...

I would definitely call the ped. Could be reflux, could be the formula. That's so scary Chat Icon

Sounds like reflux. Does she sleep on an incline? She might need meds. What did the EMTs say?

Reflux. Call Dr. and explain it to them. They will probably give her zantec or axid for it (doseage is based on weight so it needs to be upped often in the beginning when they are gaining rapidly. ) also, get a rock and play and have her sleep in there. Saved my sanity for the first 6 months of dd's life!

We are going through this with DS now who is 5 weeks. There were a few times his lips started to turn blue cause he couldn't catch his breath after choking/spitting up. We started him on Zantac and while he still has bad days, the meds has significantly reduced the spitting up . Hang in there! I know it's scary!

My dd did this. Def reflux. My dd was on alimentum and zantac then it finally stopped. She slept in a rock n play until 6 months when she finally out grew it.

Alimentum is thinner so it can come up more easily

Re: 2.5 week NB spitting up through her nose

Thanks everyone.

Spoke to her led and he also said it sounds like reflux. He wants me to feed less and more often, burp after every ounce and keep her elevated for at leat 20 minutes after each feeding.

If she doesn't show any signs of improvement he mentioned Zantac - flash back to DS and his colic ways Chat Icon he also mentioned switching formula to something a bit more heavier like Enfamil AR or Similac Spit Up.

She is in the rock n play and does the best in there than any other place. She does not fidget as much.

Was hoping we wouldn't. Go down this route again...DS was so colic for 6 months it was just miserable for all of us.

Why is she on Alimentum though? If she had a milk protein issue then she won't be able to go on the AR or Spit Up because they are milk based.

We didn't want to go through formula issues with her like we did with DS who was colic for 6 months.

Our ped was fine with us going straight to Alimentum.

Definitely sounds like reflux . I had to deal with this as well . I would also look into a CPR class . I had to flip my dd over my lap a few times . Very scary Chat Icon

Honestly I would just do the Zantac ASAP. There is clearly something going on, why torture yourself? That's so scary!!

Re: 2.5 week NB spitting up through her nose

this was my daughter and it started around 2-3 weeks.

Usually, in her carseat ( which was INSANELY SCARY since I was driving) but it would just randomly happen. VIOLENT vomit through her mouth and nose and she could not catch her breath.

Turning out is was severe reflux. Once we got her on the right dose of Zantac, she was OK. She didn't really spit up unless it was one of these violet episodes.

My DD will be 1 next week and she is still on zantac Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA - our ped also put DD on Alimentum right away which in the end was NOT the best thing because Alimentum is thin ... thin makes reflux worse. If she doesnt "need" a hypoallergenic formula with reflux, I would avoid it.

Enfamil ended up being fine for DD when we finally made the switch around 4-5 months

ALSO Chat Icon don't stress about an unhappy baby or colic just yet. Your DD sounds just like mine was and she was and is the happiest baby. Once we got her on zantac that is

I went through this with my DD same thing she had the foaming and spit up through the nose. I actually took her to the ER at 1 month old because she could not catch her breath. By the time we got there it stopped. She had reflux and severe gas. This went on for months. It has finally calmed down she is now 4 months..although she still spits up thru her nose on occasion

We are going through this as well. My DD is 7 weeks and it started around 2 weeks. DD is on Neocate due to a milk allergy, which is very thin so we have to thicken it with rice cereal. We were on axid which did nothing so we are now on Prevacid. Sending you Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon because I know how scary it is!!

Thank you everyone! I think I am going to switch to a thicker formula...Similac sensitive or Enfamil. She is super gassy on Alimentum - I'm thinking it was not the best choice for her. I just wanted to avoid the nightmare we went through with DS.

We also started burping at every ounce - which seems to have helped a lot - well from we have noticed in the last 4 feelings.

Burping every ounce def helps. Every baby is different but we switched DD to Gerber soothe and it made a world of difference...it's a great formula
