Im pretty sure the original poster didnt post this looking to get torn apart. The answer to your question is Yes, You can ride legally in a cab without a car seat if you chose to do so. Enjoy your day.

I wasn't tearing anyone apart.
I was asking a legit question.
I don't care what anyone else does nor do I judge it or tear them apart.
I was just curious as to how it's ok by law.
That's all.

But this is what I never understood- maybe someone can enlighten me..

If I told you that my DH needed to run to the store- let's say a mile or so away- here on Long Island- and was home without a carseat so he just put my DD in the back seat of his car, unrestrained and drove to the store and back- what would you say? Let's put the fact that it's illegal aside for a second.
Wouldn't that be outrageous?
Wouldn't that be bordering on call CPS?

So how is it ok- in NYC- where people, especially cabbies, drive like utter maniacs and the traffic is insane and the driving conditions are 100 times worse than anything I have ever seen on Long Island- to take your child unrestrained in a cab?
I just never understood that, but maybe I am missing something.

On a recent trip up to NY, 2yo DS fell while in a cab. He was trying to grab the handle on the cab ceiling. He fell face forward when the cab abruptly stopped. DS wailed and the cab yelled at me to control my kid. Of course I went at it with the cab driver.

Long story short, 2yo DS was fine but I was thinking how much 2yo DS needed to be in a car seat.

We would still ride cabs without thinking about it. It is just difficult to handle a 2yo (on a plane, at a restaurant and in a cab).

Is it legal? Yes.
Is it safe? Probably Not.

If you are leaving from a hospital, they do make sure you have a carseat.

I'm delivering my baby at a manhattan hospital and was told they specifically DO NOT have a policy to check you have a car seat to be able to leave the hospital. This is because it is legal, even with a 2 day old baby, to ride in a cab without a car seat. And some people will walk home from the hospital after giving birth of they live close enough, so for those people they will not produce a car seat as a means to leave with their baby. Maybe this isn't the same at all city hospitals, but that is the policy (or lack thereof) at mine. Raising a baby in nyc is a whole different animal...

Oh, they required one at my hospital.

If i needed to take a cab I would. It's legal, and city traffic can not, in any way, be compared to LI traffic. But I suppose that makes me a horrible mom. Throw me in with the formula feeders, CIO moms and those who nurse in public. Chat Icon

There are seatbelt in cabs. You can either buckle them up in one or buckle them up while sitting on your lap.
