Poor babies :( the factory farm egg industry makes me physically ill. If you eat eggs please buy ones that are from humanely raised , pastured chickens. Vital farms and handsome brook farms are both good choices.

I have raised chickens in my backyard since 2006 and have friends in the south that rescue commercial hens. The stories are always horrific.
This blog is beautifully done., thanks for sharing.

I can tell you chickens have feelings. Mine know their names, they know what the like and dislike, they know happiness and pain.
They are beautiful, sweet creatures that do not deserve that life.
I'm not vegan or vegetarian. I believe humans are supposed to eat meat and eggs but I'm not ok with the way it's raised or processed here.

So sad!

How about Pete and Gerry's eggs? I've been buying those but haven't done any research on them. I feel like even though labels say cage free, certified humane, etc there is always some catch. I get anxiety about grocery shopping now!

ITA. My parents had chickens. They are sweet little animals and ours truly had personalities. It's disgusting what goes on in this industry.

Check out cornocopia.org's rating scale for organic eggs. The highest rating is a 5. You can buy 5 rated eggs at Whole Foods. The brand names are Vital Eggs and Handsome Brook Farms eggs. In addition to being ethically raised they taste SO much better.

Thanks!! They are a 3 so a very good choice, complies with the minimum. I'll keep buying them until one of the other farms distributes closer to me. Whole Foods is too far from me.

Thanks for the website, now I'm going to check all the products I buy regularly.

I buy my eggs from "happy chickens." They roam free all day until night when they sleep in a chicken coop. Their diet consists of bugs, worms, etc. which makes for more nutritious eggs. They are supplemented with feed that is not organic, but I'm okay with that since they are humanely treated, im supporting small farmers and much of their diet is what chickens should be eating.

I'm sure there are local farms in long island where you can buy farm fresh, pastured eggs.
