CIO- How old

With all my kids i started at 8 months. I don't think 7 1/2 months is too young, and i would have done it at 6 months, but i just wasn't ready.

I didn't let her cry for more than 10 mins. I only had to CIO for bedtime though.

Re: CIO- How old

i did CIO when dd was 5.5 months
we had to do it for bedtime and it lasted 2 nights - the third night she slept
it was tough, but we needed it - couldnt function at work

edit to add we let DD cry the first night for almost 50 minutes Chat Icon
the second night was more like 35
that was it

we tried CIO when she was closer to 4 months and she was not ready...or maybe it was bc we tried the "progressive" way where you go in every so often but never pick them up - coming in and leaving DD seemed to upset her MUCH more

With my twins i had to do it with DD first and she cried for, no joke, 48 minutes the first night. There was nothing wrong. She just wanted to be held. I starred at the video monitor for 48 minutes and she finally fell asleep. The second night was 15 minutes and she was out. The third night was maybe 10 minutes and after that she went to bed with no problems. with DS 1 I had to do it for naps only and he cried for 30 minutes the first time and after that he went down without a problem for naps. For DS 2 he cried, more like whimpered, for 10 minutes the first night and that was it. I knew with all of them that nothing was wrong and they weren't crying to the point they couldn't breathe, so it worked out for us. I hated every second of it, but in the end everyone slept, including me and DH so CIO really helped for us.

I'm one of those mean moms that did CIO at 4 months, had fantastic results. Cried 37 minutes the first night and never cried again, best thing I ever did.. he has always cried himself to sleep for naps but it only lasts 5-7 minutes.

Re: CIO- How old

we just started CIO with DD who will be 8 months on Saturday. (only at night, she doesn't really cry during naps)

first night, fussed 10 mins at bedtime
woke at 12 and she cried for 30-40 mins Chat Icon woke at 3, screaming for 10-15 and then slept through until 715.

second night - woke and cried for 15 minutes at 230am

last night (third night) fussing for 2-5 minutes at 11pm and slept through until 715 when we woke her

If you're mean, then I must be the devil - we started at 3 months Chat Icon

I felt like at that age, he was already starting to try to manipulate us and didn't want him to get in the habit of it as he got older.

We let DS cry for as long as WE were comfortable with (usually until right before he started getting hysterical). Many times, it was only a minute or two, but we tried to hold out for as long as possible. It took a week or so probably but he's been STTN since without any issues.

ETA - you let them cry for as long as it takes unless they puke, poop, are in an unsafe position etc. They usually cry themselves to sleep.

if you go in after 15, 20, 40 mins of crying, that just teaches them to cry longer and you will come in.

I agree with this.

At 4 months / 14 lbs they are physically able to sleep through the night.

Going in to soothe in intervals was like a bad slot machine - they figured out that if they cried eventually we would come in.

Took about 2 nights once we did full CIO.

They were 7 1/2 months - 5 months adjusted for prematurity.

With my triplets I did it at 6 months. They are now 15 months. Two caught on quick, one just detests bedtime/naptime no matter how tired he is. Unless someone is truly hysterical, I let it go in for up to a half hour. There is a decibel of crying that, for me, is intolerable. You'll know what your limit is! Sleep is important, for you and the baby. Good luck.
