Would you say something (pumping at work)
And the lights have been out in there on and off all week - just went down there and total darkness! I had to take a lamp off a desk from someone who is out this week! I can't catch a break!

what?? that's crazy! They really need to make the room more accomadating for you!
I like the suggestions of locking the room and needing a key to open it.

Don't worry. HR will not say "who cares". They set up a dedicated room for nursing moms. If they didn't have the space for a dedicated room, they'd need to arrange for it to be available when you need it. They do not want people napping or whatever else in there.

I would say something! You shouldn't have to convince people to leave because they want to take a nap while they're supposed to be working! If they don't feel well they should have called jn sick. Plus it's so rude to go in there feeling sick and possibly spreading germs to a nursing mother with a baby at home!

This is ridiculous! Isn't it a law to have a designated pumping space? I know many businesses have to double use a space, but your work has a space for this, and are choosing to use it incorrectly. I feel they could get in trouble for this. I don't understand why people can't support moms in this, as if returning to work and breastfeeding isn't hard enough!

Agreed. And the person I spoke to is even a mother! I guess she didn't breastfeed!

That is insane. There was a room at work. I think it was called the wellness room. When I was pg I used to lay in there during lunch bc I was so exhausted I could barely make it through the day. There were several ladies who knocked when they needed to pump. You better believe I got out of there immediately, no questions asked and I even apologized. Then I sat in the large file room but thats besides the point. I can't believe people. I hope HR can help you.

They need to provide a space that is separate and private. It doesn't have to be used only for that purpose. It stinks people are taking advantage of the room, but if you are pumping and need it walk in and say I have to pump so you need to leave now. If there is an issue then I would go back to HR and explain the issue. f it happens again I would contact someone higher up or find out who to contact at the State department about the lack of compliance.

That is so weird - I can't believe they are ok with random people sleeping in there.
At my office the nursing mother's room is keycard coded and can only be opened by people who are on the list to pump.

That really stinks and I can't believe they didn't even care that people are just hanging out in there. The sick girl really has some nerve too . . .
You have one up on me though, at least you get a lock. The room I pump in has no lock, just a sign on the door. I have people (women only but still) walk in on me here and there. That's loads of fun.

That was how it was when I pumped with DD1 - just an empty office that had no lock and you could even see into!

The irony is that I work in the compliance department! I could raise to my boss (general counsel) if it happens again!

Here is what the NYS guidelines say:
"An employer who is unable to provide a dedicated lactation room or other location under these guidelines, may allow the use of a vacant office or other available room on a temporary basis for the expression of breast milk, provided the room is not accessible to the public or other employees while the nursing employee is using the room for expression purposes."
"For the purposes of this provision: “Private” shall mean that the room or other location shall not be open to other individuals frequenting the business, whether as employees, customers, or other members of the public. To insure privacy, the room or
location should have a door equipped with a functional lock. If a door with a functional lock is not available (in the case of a fully enclosed cubicle) as a last resort an employer must utilize a sign advising the room or location is in use and not accessible to other
employees or the public."
At the very least, there should be a reservation process where you have the room, and don't have to ask other people to leave.

I would report to HR, or the manager of the lady who is in charge of the pumping room. If someone needs to make a private phone call, then they need to go to an empty office, or conference room. If someone isnt well, go to the medical room, or if there's isn't one, go home.
I would print out the rules of the pumping room and show it to the manager actually. I would put in a nice email, and if she still is acting like a snarky biotch, I;d take it to the next level. Good luck!!

Thanks everyone. I was floored by her response, but I don't want to start in with anyone unless it happens again. If it does, I will send an email with the language from the rule and copy my boss. I am sure the woman I spoke to doesn't even know what the rule says.
Also, part of the rule is that the room needs to be lit and the lights keep going out. The guys who take care of that have made many attempts to fix it, but it is still really annoying when I go to pump and the room is dark!

Thanks. And that was what I said to her when she said that the room isn't mine and other people can use it - I said I don't think it is appropriate for a sick person to lay down on a couch that I use to pump milk for my not even 4 month old baby!

That's awful. The room I use is multi purpose too, however, pumping takes first priority.
If someone isn't feeling well and needs to lie down, they should go home!

That is totally ridiculous! Sorry you have to deal with this! I would definitely make it an issue if it continues.
If it were me, I probably would have told them to go ahead and stay while I pumped. The sight of my tatas being sucked in and out of the machine would be forever etched in their memories!That'll teach 'em!  I mean, the look on my DHs face was priceless the first few times he saw the pump in action.
