would you pay for car seat installation?

Just curious on people's opinions on this. Someone I know just posted in facebook that her husband has a new business installing car seats. As part of the service he will not only install the seat in one or more cars but also teach you how to do it should the need arise.
He charges $150 to come to you any time or $75 to go to him

At first i thought it was a lot but then again I'm kinda crazy about my car seats and only have it professionally installed. I remember having a hard time getting an appointment and I also remember my sister not being able to make any appointments because her schedule is so crazy.

So what do you think. Would you be willing to pay for this service?

Nope, I wouldn't pay for that service. That's waaaaaay too expensive to click a seat into LATCH and secure it, IMO. He's charging just as much as an actual carseat. They really aren't that hard to install properly, I can't see paying for someone to do it for me.

Don't take this the wrong way but with latch system I really can't imagine why anyone can't look at the manual and do it themselves. I can totally understand having it get checked at your firehouse etc. if you're nervous but the installation is very simple.

No way. When I took the car to get the infant ca seat inspected at the fire house they actually took it out and reinstalled it for free!

Statistically, close to 90% of car seats are not installed or used properly. So, not as easy as you may think!!

Beware that just b/c you brought it to the firehouse, doesn't mean it's been installed properly unless it was installed by a certified tech, which most firefighters are not. My cousin is a high up at the fire dept, and is constantly installing car seats for people and when he came to NC he told me I had my sons straps wrong. He said they needed to be above his shoulders. Well he was dead wrong, my son was still RFimg and when RFing they need to be at or below. Just goes to show, how they can be giving out misinformation.

Still wouldn't pay $150. Honestly, if you follow your manual its not that hard. They make it so much easier these days with the built in levels and LATCH. I think it was probably harder years ago. I don't know, we've never had a problem with installation but I suppose if someone was worried they could have someone do it. I just can't see spending that kind if money though. Ya know? Chat Icon

But as an aside.......... What qualifies the guy who is charging for installation? What about him is so special? (Not trying to be snarky......at all). Is he just someone who thinks he's good at it or is there something else that warrants charging $150. KWIM?

I'm not saying I'd pay that either, but that's a scary statistic. You'd be surprised how many people don't read their manual or their car manual. They'll latch borrow when not allowed, or use the seatbelt & latch, it's not tight enough, etc. Then there's the misuse in the seat. It's sad!

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?

We paid b/c we were installing right after Sandy hit, and the county resources were a little thin (and we didn't really want to drive all around- they came to us). I found it to be very helpful, but it cost a lot less (I think $60 for 2 cars). In the future though, I'd go with the free county ones.

would you pay for car seat installation?

I would pay, but not that much. Having installed many, many seats in many vehicles, having worked checks with varying income levels, you'd be surprised at just how DIFFICULT it is to get all the rules right. And how easy it is to be part of that 90%. Which, in real life, I've found the % of correctly installed seats to be much lower. I did a county check with SafeKidsNY and CarseatChris, and only one car had a properly installed seat: mine. Yes, I get my seats inspected too. I'm not perfect and I miss things at times too.

I never charged, but I also didn't do a lot of private checks either. I do have a friend here in CT who charges, but the amount of detail she goes into and the lessons she gives make it worth it. She also goes to them at their convenience, which for working parents who can't drop everything to go to places like Hassel or the County can be worth her small fee. She will also give seat recommendations and even go shopping with you. Don't forget, it's a service and a private check is MUCH more personalized than a quick county check. The person's time isn't free. If they're coming to you, they're using gas, putting mileage on their own vehicle. Most carry a liability policy and the constant training, ceu's etc isn't really free (TIME is not free!) The people who do it at Hassel are paid by Hassel and it's a service offered by them. The county folks, they're paid. Permanent fitting stations usually have paid staff. The rest of us? Volunteer at checks. FOR FREE. If I'm going to regularly be asked to do private checks, why shouldn't I be compensated for my time?

$150 is a bit obnoxious, IMHO.

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?

I would def not pay that much. I wouldn't really want to pay at all. TOH has car seat safety checks and I've used them several times, as recently as this past Wednesday.

Car seats seem easy to install but usually aren't installed correctly. The TOH checks helped me and DH learn to install our seats correctly. With DS2 coming soon and DS outgrowing the LATCH, I went to a check this week and am glad I did.

If I was a FTWM I could see maybe paying a small fee for the convenience bc I do remember not being able to get our infant seat checked before DS1 was born bc DH and I worked FT in NYC. But 150/75 is way too much!

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?

No way. My DH installed them then I got them checked for free by certified carseat people. I went to Hassel Auto-body (West Babylon) twice and Sunken Meadow Auto-body (Commack) twice. Both places ended up tightening the seats and tethering them but said overall DH did a good job. Both places displayed their carseat checking credentials/certification.

Ditto. My husband can pretty much rebuild a house- he would laugh if I told him we had to pay someone to install a car seat.
It's not rocket science.
