Solids help
We started my almost 5 mo old on rice cereal last week. She spit it out every time & even gagged a couple of times. A few days ago we tried oatmeal. No gagging this time but she made grossed out faces & pushed it out every time.
What am I doing wrong? Is she just not ready yet? Should I try veggies instead?

Re: Solids help
i think this is pretty normal... we started at about 6 months, and there is definitely a learning curve in terms of "oh this stuff you are shoving into my little milk hole is actually food and tasty and not poison". Or at least that is how it worked in my house. I'd give it another week and see if she starts getting into the groove a bit more.

Same thing here. We started DD on oatmeal at 5 months and I made it pretty liquidy. At first I felt like more was getting on her face and bib. Little by little she has grown to do better and she now finishes it and I'm even making it thicker.

I started at 6mos w avocado, banana, and then the "orange veggies". She went crazy and loved it all.
Sometimes they take a little bit of time to get used to something new.

I started at 5 months with sweet potatoes then swquash and carrots. Orange veggies are healthy for them and easy to digest. Rice cereal has no nutritional value and is a waste of time.

Thanks ladies- I will try to make it more watery. This weekend I think I will go buy veggies and see if she will eat that.

For us, those were signs that DS just want ready yet. We gave him another month and tried again at 6 months and he took right to it at that point.

Re: Solids help
Gagging is a sign that the baby isn't ready. DS was gagging just at the sight of a spoon (despite putting EVERYTHING in his mouth) so we stopped. About a week and a half later he stopped STTN and looked interested when he saw us eating. We tried cereal again and he was great! I never made the cereal very liquidy since that seemed just like feeding him formula on a spoon! We also went to purees fairly quickly and he loves those.
I'd try purees and if your baby is still gagging/spitting the food out then just wait another week or two and try again.

Re: Solids help
we started at 4 months with rice cereal that was really watery and made with breast milk. Then after they got used to it i switched to mixing it with formula and made it a little thicker. I added banana at 6 months and oatmeal around 7 months.
i still have those days where they refuse to eat something that they loved a day ago! LOL

Re: Solids help
I am be the only one... but the first time we did cereal i made it thin and it did not go that great. I made it thicker after that (knowing I could easily add more formula and thin it out) and he does better with it on the thicker side.
We still tried veggies a week later cause he didn't love it. He eats the whole container of any veggie (we have done 4) and he had apples last wknd with the cereal and liked them.
I don't plan to stick with the cereal too much longer.
